Talked to the family yesterday, life has apparently not been going so well for my siblings. Current shit economy has hit them pretty damn hard

My sister went on MassHealth temporarily when she was pregnant and they were pretty good to her, but then again she was pregnant, and we all know how much people care about the unborn right up until the time that they come into this world (or in MassHealth's case, up to a year after they are born). I doubt my brother will find treatment to be as wonderful, but then again when you have asthma bad enough that you're getting only about eighty percent of the air you breathe and you need medication of some sort, its better than nothing

I would have hoped the state would use it to strong arm companies that can easily afford to give their employees benefits and just won't*nods nods nods* Most retail/food service jobs don't give benefits. The last place I worked had a union and offered health benefits to full-time employees but you had to be working there full-time for a year. This was back when 38 hours a week was still considered part-time in CT

I know Starbucks offers benefits, that's one of the reasons Phil started working there, but there is a waiting period of like six months before it kicks in and since my sister was already pregnant, MassHealth was necessary. Kind of too bad my brother can't get a job there (even if he could, the hours would probably be worse).
I see something backwards here. Bringing a child into the world you can't afford = covered. Ensuring that never happens = not covered.
Very fucking backwards. Especially coming from a bunch of people professing to want to reduce the number of abortions. Not only should it be covered, it should be easier to find a doctor willing to do it in the first place.
(I know its a touchy issue, but I doubt there would be anyone here violently opposed; I'd imagine the babies are awesome everyone should have one crowd would steer clear from someone that so openly hates children. I appreciate the gesture though :-)).
nobody really gives a shit if you're smart or not, they care if you have the papers that say you should be
Aint that the truth. I can't tell you how many complete dipshits I have worked with who have a BS or BA and yet that is the first thinng a lot of people look at when hiring.
I'm super happy that at least you're in a stable situation even though so many things are falling apart.
Ach, your poor brother... how can the pharmacy *refuse* to fill his prescription???? That's NOT their place to decide! And how the hell can anyone fine him for not being able to afford health insurance??? The world is insane, seriously.
I'll pray for the health of your family, and for their financial situations. *hugs*
They claimed it as a policy to not hand out that much of that particular drug at once. I would have tried to get it filled elsewhere. As for the other thing, I don't know exactly how the law works, and admittedly he should have moved on this a lot sooner, but I would think if they aren't going to strong arm companies that can afford benefits and don't offer them anyway then they should at least make Mass Health much easier to get on.
Very sad stuff. How on Earth can they fine someone for not having health insurance when they can't afford it? shouldn't the fine go the the company where the person works? And if he's got *other* options for getting the medicine he needs he shouldn't hesitate to use them, so long as the meds are authentic and untainted. It sucks that I even have to talk like that over a poor man who actually needs this shit to live. Gods bless you and your family.
I do know there are some companies that legitimately can not afford to give their employees benefits or they would go out of business (and unfortunately if they were going to fine the company it would have to be uniformly). That said, I don't believe my brother works for one of those companies. I imagine if nothing else, this law would have to make Mass Health a lot easier to get on, they just expect people to act on it. But yeah, a fine, that soon, ridiculous.
