California, you suck. You seriously suck.
Arkansas, you suck worse.
This was one I heard no one on my friend's list talk about until today. Arkansas passed a law banning gay couples from adopting children, although what that law really is is a ban on single people adopting children (I wonder how many people actually realize that when they were voting, or if it wasn't made into a OH NOES! Must stop those EBIL GHEY PEOPLES from corrupting our children!!!).
Its bad enough when you deny couples rights, when you have to go around a tell a whole bunch of people who just got married that their marriage license is no longer worth the paper its printed on because a group of self righteous religious douche bags who don't even know you just can't even deal with the very idea that you exist. They are adults. Dragging a third party into things, forcing children to suffer for your bigotry, so much worse.
How big a percentage of those looking to adopt children do you think is made up of gay couples that can't procreate on their own and single people that just never found the right person? We all know, most couples that can have their own children prefer to do it that way, that's why people sink millions of dollars they probably don't really have into fertilization treatments that aren't necessarily going to work, because its just so fucking important you have your own little baby than to look for one of the sadly many unwanted children that already exist (which is a rant for another time). That has got to be a good chunk of the list right there. There have always been more unwanted children than there are families willing to adopt them, and you have just drastically reduced that number, damning those children instead to have to grow up with the state, in a system that doesn't give two shits about them.
I had some minor dealings in my life with foster care, I know of others who have had much more. It fucking sucks. Its not something any kid should have to grow up in. Oh sure, there are good foster homes out there, but for every good one there is there is a nightmare one and about five more where no one cares; you want to play those odds?
But I guess Arkansas has decided it is so much better that children never know a loving home at all than know one that isn't a socially acceptable nuclear family.
Because growing up without a place to call home, bouncing between foster homes, never having parents who love you that you can connect with, etc. that's never screwed anyone up. Nope, never.
