The other part of my trip - Spider is stalking me

Hey,
sannion, want to swap stories? ;-)

I won't say the stalking thing is totally new, but it went into hyperdrive over the vacation; Renee noticed it too and had a real good laugh over it.

For the last two weeks or so I've been seeing depictions of spiders in odd places. In advertisements, in tattoos, in someone walking by me wearing a plain black windbreaker that once they pass i notice for some reason there is a small spider design on the jacket just below the back of the neck, things like that. Nothing beat you in the face out of the ordinary, but it starts to add up and starts feeling significant.

During the course of my vacation:

1. First day, I go upstairs to put my bags in the bedroom I'm using. The room belongs to one of Grandma Jane's daughters who has a very large collection of random odd little trinkets (some of them were really cool, things I'd have in my house were I the kind of person who likes collecting lots of little things). On the dresser across from my bed I see I big metal spider just sitting there in front of the mirror.

2. There was actually a smaller black plastic spider sitting next to the metal one, it just took me two days to notice it was there.

3. There were a lot of spider plants in that room too, which Renee was all too gleeful to point out to me.

4. The day after we arrive, we go to market. Basically a large warehouse where a lot of people set up shop and sell you all their weird shit. We're walking along, past a very large candy stand and I see Gummi Spiders. I have never seen Gummi Spiders before. So of course I had to have some, bought I think half a pound or so (the idea of ritually consuming them comes to mind, just snacking on them doesn't feel right to me).

5. Renee suddenly remembers a bead store around the corner that we could stop in and look around for a while before her sister comes to pick us up for our outing with them. A while back I kind of wanted to make prayer beads for Hermes, hell seemed like everyone else was doing it so why not give it a shot? Problem is I'm a very verbal person and I don't have a great deal of aesthetic sensitivity; what color beads of types of stone represent this to you is way beyond my ability. I was gladly going to give up the idea, until later that same day Hermes told me I was doing it anyway. Thankfully he has given me some time to think things through, well when I remember to when I'm not thinking about all the other stuff I need to think about I should say.

Anyway, we go into the bead store, look for a few minutes at all the stones, then turn to this table of metal charms and oh my fucking gods, there is a single spider charm sitting right out in the middle of that half of the table all by itself. No other beads in that display were out of place, nothing else was left out, the little cup of spider charms wasn't even anywhere near where we saw that one sitting,  it took us a minute to locate the rest of them way on the other end of the table.  I'm still trying to think in my head how that one came about, why someone would have grabbed just one spider bead, walked all the way around the table with it and placed it down so carefully in the middle of things were it would immediately draw your eye.

And yes, I bought the spider charm, the very one that was sitting out there. I have two small chains around my neck I don't ever put anything on, its now on one of them. Renee and I tried to take a photo of it before she left for work this afternoon, but it came out kind of crappy so you'll have to wait.

6. Lancaster Sunday paper. Neither of us can remember anymore if it was in the Entertainment section or Perspectives (makes more sense in entertainment than in the place where people can pretend their opinions count for something, but we're really not sure about it) there was a very short article about a children's book starring a character called Miss Spider. Miss Spider Alights was what the headline said, or something very close to it. Renee had fun pointing that one out to me, too.

So much fun when gods and spirits decide to follow you around and beat your head in until they get your attention. :-P

Spider is one that I suppose I have been putting off. Well, much got put off when life started getting crazy, but this one especially. Because the totem animal thing is very foreign to my experience and I'm honestly not much sure what to do, how to approach things.

I should probably try to figure that out. before spiders build a nest in my hair or something. :-P

life, weirdness, spider, religion
