Sleep Disorders

My co-worker showed me a link he found off a friend's livejournal about a particular sleep disorder that I had never heard of but which he thought sounded like what was wrong with me.

It was called Delayed Sleep Phase Disorder. Basically people who can not fall asleep prior to the early morning hours; it doesn't matter what time they actually go to bed, doesn't matter what time they have to get up, they can not fall asleep before then. It usually takes them anywhere between a half hour to an hour to fall asleep however tired they might be, and once they've woken up they are awake until their next "night" however little sleep they may have gotten. Its just a matter of getting to sleep, they otherwise sleep perfectly fine and need a normal amount of sleep just like everyone else, making it very difficult for them to get up in the morning.

That pretty much sounds like me. In fact the website said that its all pretty much your body clock being seriously out of whack, which is always the way I described myself not having ever heard a name for it before. The only real discrepancy would be that the website said these people always fall asleep at the same time, whereas my sleep cycle is continually delayed; I'll go to bed at the same time for a week or maybe two, then it will slip for an hour or  maybe two, hold another week or two, then slip again and on and on. Co-worker told me that might not matter anything, as everyone will react just a little differently.

Interesting. I had never heard of any sleep disorders anything like what was going on with me, nor ever met anyone with  my particular problems. Which fact led my mother and a few other people for a long time to think that there was actually nothing wrong with me at all and I could control it if I really wanted to. So its interesting that I might actually have a name for it after all. If only there was something that could really be done to help...
