we'll never get to heaven 'til we reach that day

Are you fucking kidding me with Ragtime? Seriously, are you kidding me? Holy shit!

I'd completely missed it, as it came out right when I wasn't keeping up with musicals. I believe that was the year I had my revelation about not being an actress. Well, I kept hearing people raving about it last summer, and Gordon from The Rockae was in the original cast, then I almost auditioned for it, then listened to Jamal raving about it, and finally got the soundtrack the other day. Upon first listen, I wasn't really impressed. Granted, I only listened to a couple of songs - but the one everyone talks about, "Wheels Of A Dream", just didn't hit me.

Today, I randomly decided to sit down and re-read the synopsis while listening to the whole soundtrack in order... holy fuck. This show is amazing, and every bit as socially relevant as something like Hair. The subplots interweave perfectly, and everything from immigration to racism to political upheaval is spotlighted. I'm only just at the end of Act I, and I've been sitting here like an idiot crying through most of it. Beautiful. I swear, anyone who's been following the plot who isn't moved by Coalhouse Walker's "NOOOOOOOOO!!!!" at the beginning of "'Til We Reach That Day" is a heartless fool.

I'll be checking the book out of the library today.
*sniff*
