APIA online reading/writing poetry workshop!

Sep 17, 2008 06:05

Greetings lovelies!

Thought you or someone you know might be interested -- please forward the call onto potentially interested folks! We are doing this both because we felt a need for such a group for ourselves as contemporary APIA poets & as well as community service to our community of APIA poetry writers (thus, a labor of love, no cost for participants!)

xoxo,
Ching-In

Hi all,

Ching-In & Mars are bringing back the Asian Pacific Islander American on-line writing workshop (ALAG3) this fall! This time around, we're hosting a 12-week reading & writing group for Asian American writers to investigate contemporary Asian American poetry, using moodle and starting Wednesday, October 15.

ALAG3 is a great space for APIA writers who want to read more APIA poetry in community and to write in conversation with what we read. We will read 6 APIA poetry books (chosen by the group) and have 6 writing prompts (generated from group members). ALAG3 is also a great space for those who want to become more comfortable at facilitating and generating writing prompts.

Don't worry if you feel under-read or that you don't understand poetry or {insert worry}. We want the group to be a supportive space where we can all learn from each other, become better writers, become aware of the work of our peers and elders and community members and have fun!

We will cap the group at 12 eager APIA poets (first come first serve)! Please e-mail Ching-In at chinginchen (at)gmail.com as soon as possible but no later than the end of the day on Wednesday, September 24 with the following:

* your name

* preferred e-mail

* Try to suggest at least one (and a maximum of two) Asian American poetry book(s) that you think it would be helpful to read in a group & a short description of the book. You can copy a summary of Amazon or Goodreads or write up a paragraph about why you think it's important to read or why you want to read it.

Once we have our group set, we'll poll everyone and come up with a list of the top 6 books we'll read. We'll also give about 3 weeks for everyone to get their books and sign up for a slot as either a reading facilitator or a writing prompt generator, and begin the workshop on Wednesday, October 15

We will alternate between reading and discussing books and writing prompts based on the book we read each week.

For example:

Week 1 -- We will read Book 1 by Author 1. The reading facilitator will post up a list of helpful questions as well as some context (could be historical or about the author) for the book we are reading. We will take the week to read and respond to the group about the book.

Week 2 - The writing prompt generator will post up a writing prompt based on Book 1. We will take the week to write and post, as well as response to at least one of our peers' pieces by the end of the week.

We would say that the weekly time commitment for this group (Week 1: reading the book and responding; Week 2 - writing your own poems, posting/reading/responding to peers' posts) is 10 hrs/wk for 12weeks.

Before emailing Ching-In (chinginchen (at) gmail.com) about joining the group, please consider the following:

1) Can you make the time commitment? These weekly times are MINIMUM estimations.

2) Are you able to obtain the books and commit to reading them?

3) Can you submit your questions/context and/or writing prompt, poems and responses promptly?

We will work on a Wednesday-Tuesday schedule, meaning new books and/or assignments are posted on Wednesdays, responses or poems are due Tuesdays, and responses to last week's work are due on Tuesdays.

Since we are working on-line, attendance means posting by Tuesday deadlines.

Thanks for reading all this! Let's do this!!!

peace,
