“You didn’t intend for it to happen this way,” Ruki soothed, plastering a smile on his face that could crack a smile on even the sternest of men. His hair was splayed out on Reita’s lap, his neck resting on Reita’s crossed legs. Reita’s fingers danced along his forehead, brushing back stray hair. It surprised and startled Reita all in one when he saw a single drop of water land so gracefully on the empty space right between Ruki’s eyes.
Silence lapsed over them before Ruki smiled once more, gentler than before. Almost timidly he raised a hand, like a child seeking acceptance, or searching for the hand of his best friend, when in reality he was simply reaching up to touch Reita’s cheek, his fingers finding a damp streak. “You’re crying,” was all he said by way of explanation.
“I’m not,” Reita whispered. “My eyes are just watering.”
Reita knew swearing to someone to love them for all eternity didn’t involve loving someone else along the way. He’d always looked down on those who took back their word, who were supposedly in love only to give their heart completely to another. But, somehow, as much as Reita had tried to prevent it, this was his very own predicament, as unintentional as it was. Certainly, he was seeing things from a new light. Reita had fallen for another who wasn’t his betrothed. Reita had fallen for Ruki, his best friend, his love, his beautiful disaster.
“Okay,” Ruki murmured, by way of acceptance. Silence loomed over them once more, accompanied only by Reita’s sniffles for the briefest of moments before Ruki added, “You didn’t mean to love me.”
“I didn’t want to,” Reita confessed, his vision too blurred to see the hurt that crossed Ruki’s eyes for a split second before they lightened once more. Reita brushed the water from his lashes, not sobbing, not crying, merely letting his eyes periodically overflow.
“I know,” Ruki replied, closing his eyes.
He was surprisingly good at blocking out the mental images of Reita anything less than perfect.

I'm sure someone is happy that I've finally written their OTP. This came out way different than I intended. And yes, the title is a Dashboard Confessional song. :)
