In his lifetime, Reita had come across people who had asked too much of him.
Please, his old girlfriend had said. Choose me over the music.
But music had always been Reita’s love, one of his true passions that never faded, no matter how frustrated he got at himself for missing a note, for not learning a new song right off the bat. He’d sent her away on the terms that he knew he couldn’t give her the attention she so rightfully deserved.
Growing up, his parents had told him to settle down comfortably, to marry a nice, pretty woman and earn a steady, successful income at a well to-do job.
Stubborn as most teens tend to be, Reita chose to defy them, the one and only time he did the exact opposite of their wishes. Music was one solid thing in his life, something that would always be the same no matter how many times he played it. A musical note would always be a musical note, and the solidity of that fact gave Reita comfort. When he left his hometown, he didn’t know if he’d make it big or even if he’d get anywhere at all, but he didn’t want to live his whole life without knowing.
And yet, Reita didn’t remember any of the things he’d given up before because, here and now, Reita knew he’d give up everything - maybe even music - if Kai asked him to.
People like Kai weren’t supposed to come along in a lifetime. They appeared to be a blessing in disguise while really holding a devils interior. Kai, the sweetest of them all, was the one Reita simply had to fall for. How cliché to fall in love with the nice one, the boy with a personality sweeter than candy.
Reita loved the way Kai would laugh and smile right before he’d lace their hands together to drag them off to a quite, secluded room. Sometimes they sat for hours simply talking, never doing more than holding hands, while other times they did nothing but touch and feel as the hours flew by. Reita loved both moments with Kai; they were private in every sense and something that the world would never know about.
Kai was like a missing piece in his life, the lost key that opened a world Reita hadn’t known existed. Thinking such thoughts only brought Reita back to one conclusion - people like Kai were the downfall of others, completely unintentional as it may be. Yet, Reita had already surrendered his heart to Kai, so what else could he possibly lose?
“You’re my everything, Kai,” Reita whispered into Kai’s ear, his drummer boy merely shifting his body to press closer to Reita, though his eyes stayed closed. It was enough to tell Reita that Kai was at least listening to him. Reita shifted, pulling Kai onto his lap, their bodies awkwardly meshing together on the couch in Kai’s living room.
“You’re my life,” Kai countered tiredly, pressing a kiss against Reita’s shirt. His body ached from the earlier band practice, his body sore as though someone had been repeatedly beating his arms with something heavy.
Reita was choked up for a moment - he’d never been told such strong words before, their meaning not at all dimmed down by Kai’s tired demeanor. He had never been someone’s all before, almost doubting Kai’s words, though found it hard to at the obvious way Kai was holding on to his shirt. He looked adorable with his body curled up, eyes closed, his body so completely open, everything about him screaming how much he trusted Reita to protect him while he was in such a defenseless state. Kai had come along and hadn't asked for anything unreasonable out of Reita, only wanting to take a chance on finding love in someone, something he'd easily gotten out of Reita. With his pretty angel eyes, he'd managed to capture Reita's heart in a matter of months.
Reita had never loved someone so much before, the realization scaring him just slightly. Kai was his to make or break. This time, Reita concluded, he wasn’t going to make a huge decision. This time he wasn’t going to have to choose between a girlfriend or music, parents or a career. This time it was the irrational fear that he might have to choose between music or the love of his life, absurd as the idea seemed, for Kai shared a love of music that rivaled his own.
Holding Kai closer to him, Reita refused to be forced into making a choice, choosing one or the other. This time, Reita was going to let himself indulge in the better parts of his options - being with Kai didn’t mean he couldn’t have music, and being a musician didn’t mean he couldn’t have Kai. Reita relaxed into Kai’s couch, holding Kai even closer than before, a content smile on his face.
Still, as he drifted off to a heavy sleep filled with darkness, Reita couldn’t help but think that, if for some reason Kai ever asked him to drop music, Reita would always let his bass hit the floor for Kai in a heartbeat.
