Against the World

When Hikaru took Kaoru's hand, girls sighed and wept and clasped their hands to their hearts. He led their performance with an embarrassing deluge of words that left almost nothing to the imagination, titillating, like a secret exposed to the world in fit of dizzying passion.
They clung to each other and rubbed and petted and then laughed, unrepentantly, when they were free from their public. They teased and joked and slung their arms around Haruhi with a casual ease that had Tamaki windmilling his arms, loudly distraught.
Hikaru would wink and Kaoru would blush when they playacted, and Kyouya would add another several thousand yen to their profits for the day. Hikaru would elbow Kaoru and whisper something in his ear and their eyes would light up with unholy glee, and Haruhi could only roll her eyes and wonder why no one else could see beneath their acts.
They were troublemakers and as prone to histrionics as Tamaki himself.
Honey remembered when they were in elementary school, two little boys who held hands and turned wide, distrustful eyes on the world, and he looked at them now, and wondered if anything had changed except the face of the mask.
Hikaru was brash and Kaoru was quieter, and when Kaoru took Hikaru's hand, they had no audience, only the aching silence of two tightly clasped hands, left and right. When they were alone and all their secrets laid bare, there were no words; Hikaru was the one who clung and Kaoru was the one who smiled, and it was titillating and dizzying and more perfect than all the almost-kisses and raucous teasing.
To the world, Hikaru led and Kaoru followed, but when they faced the world, two as one against all odds, Kaoru was the one holding Hikaru's hand.
