Christmas Drabbles 2005

For: lb_x
Pairing: Fuji/Eiji [Prince of Tennis]

Perfect Day

“Hoi, hoi, Fujiko!” caroled Eiji, bouncing into the locker room, clapping his mittens together. “Let’s go, let’s go! I need to go buy Christmas gifts!”

“Sorry, Eiji,” Fuji said as he slipped his coat on. “Almost done.” He quickly zipped up and slid his gloves on, at the very last wrapping his scarf snugly around his neck and picking up his tennis duffel. He smiled at the redhead rocking on his feet impatiently in front of the door. “Ready.”

Eiji spun around and dashed back outside into the snow where he’d been waiting. “Good, let’s go before all the good things are gone!”

Chuckling, Fuji said his goodbyes to Oishi and Tezuka, the only members still remaining in the clubhouse, and followed his best friend. Once out past the school gates, Eiji tugged Fuji excitedly along the snow-covered sidewalks toward the subway station. They would have to catch a short ride to the shopping district but it was something they had done plenty of times before, though the ride might be more interesting this time considering that Eiji was acting more hyperactive than usual. Shopping was something Eiji enjoyed immensely, Fuji knew, as long as it was for things he liked. Toothpaste and sneakers were high up on that list, and tennis things, and most of the people Eiji was buying gifts for expected something along those lines.

What was remarkable was how pleased each of them was upon receiving such a gift. Fuji thought it had something to do with Eiji’s delivery and presentation-utterly proud and gleeful, the sheer force of his bright grin practically wiling you to like his present, because could you disappoint a face like that?

“Who are you shopping for, Fuji?” Eiji asked suddenly while they were on the subway, turning in his seat to peer curiously at his friend.

“Just the regulars,” replied Fuji. “I’ve already gotten things for everyone else.”

Eiji made an appalled face. “Fuji~,” he whined, “I can’t believe you’re almost all done! When did you have time to do all this? It’s not fair. The only present I’ve gotten is yours.” He slumped back in his seat, arms crossed and pouting.

“Oh?” Fuji raised an eyebrow, smiling. “I’m glad I have precedence.”

With a grin, Eiji’s arms went around Fuji, comfortably, familiarly. “Of course,” he said brightly. “You’re Fujiko, nya~” He bumped his nose against Fuji’s, heedless of the eyes that strayed their way from the other passengers. “Did you get me something good?” he prodded, shamelessly nosy.

“Saa, I guess you’ll have to wait and see,” was Fuji’s murmured response, teasing.

“Unfair,” Eiji exclaimed again in a huff of breath as he drew back. Fuji only smiled as the subway continued its way to downtown Tokyo, city scenery flashing past in a palette of winter colors.
