Shohei weighs the pros and cons of thinking. Ken-Ken helps.

Thinking About You
by meitachi

Shohei had this terrible habit of getting lost in his thoughts. So lost, in fact, that even a map would do him little good in finding his way out amidst the jumble, for who could see a map when being distracted by thoughts of Ken-Ken in any case? Ken-Ken was very distracting, Shohei concluded, or would have, had he not been otherwise occupied in thinking about Ken-Ken’s smile or Ken-Ken’s voice, or the way Ken-Ken would pet his trains like they were more precious to him than any dog or cat would ever be, which was probably true. To Ken-Ken, dogs yapped and cats bit, but trains? They whistled. They went clackety-clack-clack over the tracks and it was like music to Ken-Ken’s ears.

Ken-Ken, Shohei decided upon further reflection, was sort of weird.

But then, was Shohei one to talk? He was currently lying on the floor of his living room, immobile, because somehow he had managed to trip himself on the vacuum cord while doing chores and had tangled himself thoroughly. He lay on the carpet and stared at the ceiling, still thinking about Ken-Ken, because thinking about Ken-Ken was one of the things he liked to do best. Well, except for maybe talking to Ken-Ken or being hugged by Ken-Ken or even kissed by Ken-Ken. No, that last one was definitely pretty high on his list of things he liked to do best, most definitely higher than just thinking about Ken-Ken.

So what he’d meant to say, he supposed, was that Ken-Ken was one of the things he liked to think about most. As opposed to, say, why his sister was home early from her hospital shift and was standing in the doorway to the living room laughing hysterically at him.

Shohei blinked and glanced up at her. “Help?” he pleaded.

In the end, she did, but he ended up having to do her share of chores for two weeks. He was a little wary about how he would fare.

Kissing Ken-Ken was something new, which was maybe why Shohei liked it so much. The first time had happened completely by accident one day while Che was far away in her school in another town and Tayo and Ko had decided to go shopping for new clothes. More truthfully it would be said that Tayo had decided to go shopping and Ko had been the closest unfortunate soul at hand and had been dragged along unwillingly. Shohei and Ken-Ken waved him sympathetic goodbyes from where they had ducked behind the nearest telephone pole.

It was then, when they turned back to look at each other, alone in one of the many deserted alleyways that populated their community, that Ken-Ken accidentally pressed Shohei up against the pole and Shohei grabbed Ken-Ken’s shoulders to steady himself, which accidentally caused Ken-Ken to lower his head and press his mouth against Shohei’s. It was all very accidental and not at all foretold by years of closeness and unresolved sexual tension. Even the tongue and prolonged five minutes of the kiss was quite accidental.

Shohei decided that kissing Ken-Ken, even completely accidentally, was far less awkward than kissing Che-which he’d only done once, and it’d been a traumatic affair with his parents bursting in on him and lecturing him in front of the entire community hall again. The resulting trauma might have had something to do with the fact that he was ill-disposed to see or kiss Che again (or it could’ve just been Che herself, but Shohei wasn’t exactly the sharpest crayon in the box). What mattered now, however, was that kissing Ken-Ken had become a new hobby of Shohei’s, which meant that there was a lot of ducking into an empty classroom during school hours to sneak in a few kisses.

Shohei even liked it more than his gundam models and he suspected Ken-Ken liked it more than his trains. Which made Shohei very happy, though the dreamy, out-in-space smile that had donned his face for the rest of the day hadn’t been noticed by many. Only when he managed to walk into a wall did someone ask him if he was okay. Of course he was okay, Shohei had replied, completely confused. Ken-Ken liked kissing him more than trains. Everything was wonderful with the world. He even thought it might be sparkling.

Sometimes Ken-Ken sparkled too, like when he turned to Shohei during lunch and smiled and offered him a prawn. Shohei would get that dreamy look again and giggle and blush and Tayo and Ko would snicker but it wouldn’t matter because who were they again? Oh look, a prawn. Shohei liked prawns. Shohei liked Ken-Ken too. Shohei really liked kissing Ken-Ken.

Which brought his thoughts in a nice, neat little circle he thought, even as he bumped into the open door.

“To the beach!” shouted Tayo, jumping up onto his chair and waving his arm dictatorially in the air.

Ko stared at him from where he was slouched in the booth. “It’s March,” he said. “It’ll be cold.”

Tayo looked at him blankly.

“There will be no cute girls in bikinis,” Ko elaborated, making a pouting face.

Tayo’s expression changed into one of abysmal horror. “You’re right!” He sat down and looked vaguely desolate, ignoring the contemptuous snort by Terumi, their reluctant waitress. “That’s so tragic,” he mourned, pressing himself into Ko’s side. “What will we do?”

Ken-Ken exchanged looks with Shohei, who looked slightly sheepish. Eheh. His friends-Tayo, mostly-were such drama queens. It was kind of embarrassing sometimes. He sneaked a look at Terumi, who rolled her eyes at him and swung around to stalk back to the counter, braids swinging behind her.

“There’s always the hot springs,” Ken-Ken pointed out.

Tayo whipped his head around to stare at him, eyes wide. “You…” he gasped, reaching out his hands to grab Ken-Ken’s shoulders over the table. “You!” he exclaimed. “You’re a genius! A brilliant genius! You shall lead the world! The hot springs!” he yelled, leaping to his feat again. He struck a pose. “To indecently clad young women we will go!” Turning, he grinned excitedly at Ko. “Right?”

Ko just looked at him. “What about Mazen?”

Tayo’s enthusiasm flagged for a moment. He paused to consider. “We’ll bring her with us!” he shouted. “She can be one of the indecently clad young women! You can bring Remi! And Ken-Ken can bring-“ He stopped short and gave Ken-Ken a sort of appalled, considering look.

“Sho-chan,” Ken-Ken replied calmly. He took a sip of his drink. “I’ll bring Sho-chan.”

“…ie!?” Shohei spluttered.

Under the table, Ken-Ken reached out for his hand and squeezed it.

In the end, Shohei decided, the onsen trip had been a good idea. Anything that involved him and Ken-Ken alone in a room together with plenty of kissing space and time was good. Especially when there was no chance of his parents or Ken-Ken’s mom bursting in on them accidentally. Actually, Shohei didn’t know if he quite believed the “accidentally” bit. And he had yet to decide which was worse-his parents walking in on him kissing his best friend or Ken-Ken’s mother. His parents had been shocked, but resolving to be good parents, had tried to “talk to him” about it. Was it their fault? Was it something he’d eaten? Didn’t he like girls? What about Che? At this point, he’d told them flat out that he liked Ken-Ken more than his gundam models and Ken-Ken liked him more than trains and that was that. His parents had been stunned into acceptance after a morbidly embarrassing “bonding experience.” Though, on the other hand, Ken-Ken’s mother had walked in on them lying on Ken-Ken’s bed in the love hotel, kissing and really not doing anything else except maybe Ken-Ken’s hand just happened to be in Shohei’s back pocket and his knee between Shohei’s legs, but that was because he was helping Shohei, um, dig something out of his pocket. Really. It only looked compromising. There was no actual reason for her to have started grinning and waggling her eyebrows at them and definitely no reason for her to pointedly remind Ken-Ken about that Talk she’d had with him explaining how everything worked between-another eyebrow waggle here-two boys and, ahem, of course there were condoms in the nightstand drawer as usual. Just, you know, in case.

Shohei was suddenly fervently glad that he and Ken-Ken were parental-free in this hot spring resort. He was still a little amazed by how they’d manage to escape but Ken-Ken had an honest face and a sincere tone when he so desired. It was a celebration for getting their exam scores back, for all of them having made it into one university or another. Surely their parents wouldn’t deny them this little trip after all their hard work? And he may have subtly mentioned all the other trips that had ended up disastrous, thanks to certain people who wouldn’t be named, and a specific trip in which all the adults ended up drunk and having sex-certainly no one they knew of course-and suddenly everyone at the community meeting was shifting and coughing and avoiding his gaze.

They got to go.

Tayo had whooped with excitement the entire way there, Mazen only kicking him twice when he got out of hand, smiling indulgently. Ko and Remi spent the entire train ride giggling at each other behind their hands, blushing and being cute. Ken-Ken and Shohei had talked, like normal, like best friends did, only with Shohei’s head on Ken-Ken’s shoulder and Ken-Ken’s arm wrapped around him. It was nice.

Not as nice as this kissing business though, Shohei thought, as Ken-Ken pushed him down onto the bed and busied their mouths. Then Shohei decided to stop thinking because, really, what was the fun of getting lost in his thoughts when he could get lost in Ken-Ken’s mouth instead? There really wasn’t much of a competition, especially when Ken-Ken added his hands, sliding them over Shohei’s side, stroking, and oh, teeth- Now that was unfair, Shohei thought distantly, because really-

Um.

It was playing -oh.

Dirty. Yeah, playing dirty.

Um.

What was he thinking again?
