Standard of Care
Super Junior, Siwon/Eeteuk (some Kangin/Eeteuk), PG, 900 words
Everyone knew Siwon had a crush on his Jungsu-hyung.
Standard of Care
by
meitachi "Jungsu-hyung, Jungsu-hyung," Siwon always said, puppy-like and eager to please. It was almost strange to see such a tall, good-looking man turn into the equivalent of a teenaged girl with a crush. He had a dimpled smile that melted women of all ages, and if you told him so, he'd only say, "Jungsu-hyung has dimples too," and smile that ridiculous smile because he truly believed, if anyone's, it was Jungsu-hyung's smile that could charm the world.
"I'm shocked you aren't mocking him to hell and back for this," Kangin said to Heechul over drinks one night.
Heechul let his head fall forward as he laughed at the glass of soju in his hands. "Please," he said with a scoff, lazily rolling his head back so he could grin half-heartedly at Kangin. "It's too pathetic for me to mock him. He's so smitten, it's disgusting."
Kangin made an uncomfortable noise in the back of his throat and tossed the remains of his glass back as Heechul peered at him curiously.
"Feeling guilty?" he wondered with a smirk. "'Cause we all know it's hopeless, don't we? Jungsu's completely out of Siwonnie's reach, isn't he?" He laughed when Kangin scowled at him and made a rude gesture. He shook his head. "You're too easy. Just like he is."

Siwon was smitten and everyone knew it, including Eeteuk, who wasn't quite sure what to about it, so he employed the most favored defense mechanism of people who didn't want to deal with things: he ignored it. He tried to be the best hyung and leader he could be, to all the members including Siwon, and most days he was too stressed, too tired, or too busy to really have time to worry about the ramifications of Siwon's crush.
Occasionally, a situation would crop up wherein Eeteuk, much to his reluctance, was forced to face the problem of Siwon's feelings. How tragic that they had to occur at all, when he was perfectly comfortable in his river of denial, he thought sadly.
"Hyung?" Siwon asked, brows scrunching in a worried expression. "Are you feeling poorly? Do you want me to buy you some juice?"
"Er," said Eeteuk, "no, I'm fine. But...you broke up with your girlfriend because of...me?" He would much rather not have his conversation at all, but Heechul had given him a Look when he'd dragged a depressed Siwon over to their dorms and dumped him in Eeteuk's care. Few people argued with Heechul's Looks, especially when those people were sharing a room with him or had been actively avoiding a very big issue with one of Heechul's favorite people (minions, Heechul declared), or, worse, both.
Siwon let out a long sigh and slumped back into the couch. "Yes. It just...wasn't right, the way she talked about you. She didn't understand how much work you put into being our leader, hyung! She didn't understand that it was so hard for you and that was why I always have to do my best to help you." He bit his lip nervously and slid a sideways look at Eeteuk. "I just want too help, hyung."
His voice was soft and so, so sincere. So typical of Choi Siwon, to say things and mean them, Eeteuk thought despairingly, hating the way he couldn't stand up against those soulful brown eyes that could (and did) break hearts, unknowingly. He sighed himself and opened his arms for a hug, Siwon happily crowding against his body, folding his long arms around Eeteuk.
"I understand," Eeteuk said softly. "Thank you for worrying about me, Siwon. But I want you to be happy too. I want you to find the right girl."
"The right girl will understand how important you are to me," Siwon said firmly, burying his face in Eeteuk's shoulder.
Eeteuk hugged him tighter and felt like the worst person in the world.

("I don't understand how he keeps missing the fact that Jungsu-hyung and Youngwoon-hyung are fucking up the ass," Donghae complained to Eunhyuk and Sungmin. "Even I'm not that blind."
Eunhyuk made a face at his phrasing, but Sungmin just shrugged. "Does he even get that he has a huge crush on hyung? I mean, he probably thinks it's normal to want to be around and help and touch and take care of the leader like that."
They shared vaguely dismayed looks and Donghae flopped onto his bed with a loud sigh. "It's hopeless. He's hopeless.")

Siwon smiled at Hankyung. "It's okay. Thanks for worrying about me...but I just want Jungsu-hyung to be happy. That's not so bad, is it?"
Hankyung looked at him a moment, still worried. Then his face smoothed out and he smiled, too. Maybe this was why Heechul had never teased Siwon, had never interfered - maybe he had understood.
"It's not bad at all, Siwon," Hankyung said softly.

Siwon had a giant and undeniable crush on his Jungsu-hyung, which went unspoken and generally accepted, despite the fact that Eeteuk loved Kangin and everyone knew this. Siwon knew this too. It didn't matter to him, though, and fear of Heechul's wrath kept everyone else from teasing Siwon for his unrequited feelings.
"The kind of person Siwon is," Heechul murmured to Hankyung one night, watching Siwon dance worried attendance on an Eeteuk exhausted from dance practice, "is that he doesn't need his feelings to be requited to care."
