Babyyyyyy

Whew!

I was going to post and say that I was feeling fully rested for the first time since Morgan was born, but then I did the dishes and the laundry and fetched a few things for , and I no longer feel quite as well rested. Ah, well.

Morgan has been pretty delightful so far. She tends to be pretty chill about most things, so most of the time we have been having a pretty good time with her. She is not so chill about diaper changes - those are when she is the loudest. (She has mastered the syllable "NAAAA" at many decibel levels.) Yesterday, however, she slept through one and was awake through another with no fussing, so they are not universally terrible anymore, I guess.

She is also pretty confused by hiccups. She gets this little round O-mouth and sort of furrows her brow and looks generally surprised and suspicious. It's pretty adorable.

Sleeping through the night is totally not something she does yet, so when I've bee wanting to get a full night's sleep, I've been crashing in the guest bedroom. reports being able to sleep through all but the worst freakouts, to which Theresa and I both say "fuck youuuuuuuuu". Basically, it seems like (other than diaper changes) if you can catch her in the early stages of fussing about things, she never really progresses to the full-on screaming stage. Unfortunately, this is more difficult while asleep. It also means that sleeping _around_ the baby is a bit tricky, because she makes lots of little noises, and the part of my brain that is trying to figure out whether she's just exercising her vocal cords or if she needs something won't really turn off. Actually, the best luck I've had sleeping around the kid is with her on top of me in the recliner, because then I'm like "ok, if she starts flailing, I will definitely notice in time to prevent a full-on freakout." Which you aren't really supposed to do, because head control and suffocation, and besides, ow my neck, so, yah. Spare room.

Unfortunately, Theresa can't really take advantage of the spare room, given the whole feeding thing, so she has really not been getting much sleep. She's functioning surprisingly well given that - I'm pretty sure there's some kind of stimulant hormone in the maternal chemical cocktail - but it'll be good once she is pumping a bit and can rotate out for a night here and there.

I am liking the cloth diaper thing pretty well, even given that we are washing them ourselves. It looks like we'll be doing about a load of diapers daily, mostly because our diaper pail only holds about as much as the kid produces each day. I'm debating whether to get a larger pail, or keep doing diaper laundry daily, because really, I'm not sure how long I want the dirty diapers sitting around anyway. We have several brands of cloth diapers and are sort of slowly figuring out which ones work best for us. They are all surprisingly absorbent, though. I guess we've had a couple of Diaper Failures, but none on me yet, which is nice, and I think that at least one was due to user error. The other was due to the leg holes being too big, though, so that particular brand is out for now.

We have used the ring sling that we got a little bit, and let me tell you, being able to hold the baby and have hands at the same time is MAGICAL. I predict lots of sling use in our future.

She's been napping in the crib a little bit, which is nice - it took us a day or two after we brought her home to figure out that we could, or wanted to, put her down, but we've been putting her in the crib a bit when she's pretty well asleep, and that doesn't seem to be a problem for her. Her room is right across from the laundry room, which I suspect will be handy from a white noise perspective.

She has apparently been doing some cluster feeding, which was during the wee hours of the morning at first, but fortunately it seems to be moving earlier, so hopefully it will stop being quite so obnoxious - it is apparently quite difficult to deal with when half-asleep.

In general, we are just totally in love, which I had not expected to kick in quite so quickly. Chalk it up to baby pheromones or something, I guess, but she is pretty much the most awesome thing in my world at the moment. I mean, also the most tiring thing, but I was expecting that. <3

So! There is your stream-of-consciousness baby report for the day. Hope you liked it.
