we were like a lynch mob running through the streets in the black of night. the little bastard remained only a few steps ahead of us. we lost him when he made a sharp turn into a long driveway. on the right side of the driveway three identical apartments. we passed them and walked to the back house. then the backyard of the backhouse. where trees were allowed to grow wild. branches and leaves and huge trunks plus the darkness hid the boy. we all seperated a few feet from eachother and roamed the grounds. he couldnt have gotten past here. he has to be hiding. we looked in the trees. no luck. we huddled. and walked back to the middle of the driveway. glass bottles of milk were piled on each porch which was only a slab of concrete raised only a few inches from the asphalt. 15 bottles on each. 20 bottles maybe. we all grabbed the bottles and flung then in every direction. hoping to hit the boy. hoping to scare him into our arms. but nothing. i passed some broken glass that was sharper than a sword and threw it against the wall. just in case the boy decided to use it to his own advantage. someone mentioned that they had a gun. shoot in in the air we urged. scare the kid from out behind the trees. someone shot once and like flipping a light switch the dark sky was lit. it was now mid afternoon. and at our feet lay a tiny bird that resembled a small arrow. we got him! we all congratualated eachother with smiles on our faces. the bird was picked up and placed on a wooden box. someone came with a plastic bag that looked specifically made to fit that bird. we shall keep this specimen in the library. for all to see!
