"Why are you here?" I asked, blocking my surprise guest from entering my home.
"It's Christmas. I wanted to just drop by, you know? Say hi, catch up maybe? You're the only one home. It's not surprising, I know you don't like to go out as much."
"No, I do like to go out. It's just that I have a job and before I had no one to go out with. I didn't want to be a third wheel. So, you said hi and all. Now you can leave."
"Akira, please. Don't be like that, let's talk."
"Fine. We'll talk. Although I have nothing to say to you." Nothing kind anyway. In all honesty, I want to slam the door on his face. He can sit out there in the cold all night wanting to talk to me and I wouldn't care. I'd just sit in my room sipping tea and eating sweets.
"Can I come in? It's awfully cold out here, and it's snowing." I rolled my eyes. Should I let him in, or leave him in the cold? I guess I could let him in, it's Christmas after all. I can do him that kindness. I moved aside and let him in. He took off his boots, hung up his coat, but let his black gloves and red scarf on.
I oddly didn't want to be so rude to him any more. "Come on, we'll talk in the kitchen. It's probably warmer than here by the door." we walked silently into the kitchen. He took a seat at the table, I turned on the light. "Would you like something warm to drink? You look freezing." I offered.
"Yes, thank you." He sat with his fingeres entwined, hands resting on the table. He started to make small conversation to break the silence as I busied myself around the kitchen. "So what did you do today?"
"Hung out with Kouyou, had dinner with the guys at Miyoko and Shinji's place, goe here not long before you. What did you do?"
"Watch movies with Naoshi. Then he left and didn't say much about that. I have no clue when he'll come back, so I decided to go see what everyone else was up to."
"Did you actually walk to everyone's house?" I asked, concerned becasue it's freezing outside, it's dark, Takanori has horrible vision, and that's a lot of walking.
"No, I took the bus for most of the way. But you know they stop running after a certain time, so I walked from the bus stop to Kai's house, then to your house."
"Kai's house? That's at least a 30minute walk. No wonder you look so cold. Here, it's not much, but it's really all I have. I'll have to go get groceries sometime this week." I placed a mug of tea in front of him. "I'm think I'm gonna make some soup. I didn't really get full at Miyoko's. Would you like to stay for dinner?"
"That sounds good, thank you. You don't have to be so nice to me."
"Well, as mad as I was at you, and as much as you hurt me, I can't really say I hate you or blame you. We'll always be friends." I can't believe I just said that. Did I feel this way all along?
"That's kind of you. I'm glad we can still be friends. Which is why I got you something." he left the kitchen and came back holding a small rectangular box. It was very thin with silver ribbon. "It's not much, but I thought you'd like it. Merry Christmas." he gave me a warm smile and sat back down at the table.
I took the box form his hand and opened it. "Thanks Taka, it's really nice."
"You're welcome. I didn't have any money to buy you a gift, so I made you one. I'm happy you like it." he grabbed the box and took out the friendship bracelet made out of black, white and red string. "I remembered how much you liked those colors."
He tired it around my wrist. I liked the way it looked. "It's cool. Thanks again."
"It was nothing. So, what kind of soup are you making?" he asked, reaching for the honey and stiring it into the tea.
"I have no clue. Wanna help me make it?"
"Of course, I love cooking." he said beaming. I got out a couple of pots and spoons while he ran around the kitchen gathering ingredients. He seemed to know what he was doing, I stood there watching him work. While he cut veggies and threw in spices and cooked the noodles, I washed the used dishes. After adding all the ingredients into one big pot, we sat at the table and waited for the soup to cook.
"So how is Nao?" I asked.
"He's okay. Still working at the music shop. I was thinking about working there too or just getting a job in general. It's boring sitting at home all day by yourself."
"I know the feeling. Have you talked to your parents at all?"
"Only mom. Dad wont even look at me when I visit sometimes. Mom is happy I'm happy and she even knows about Kai and Kohara. Dad is in denial, even though Kai admitted to being gay."
"I wonder why your father is like that."
"Probably becasue I'm not his real son. We all know he's just my douchbag stepfather and could care a less about me."
"Don't say that, I'm sure deep down he loves you. And if not, we can always say screw him."
Takanori laughed and sipped his tea. "It's good to be around you again. It hasn't been the same without you. I haven't talked to anyone but Kai, Kohara, and Nao."
"Well, I forgive you for what you did. Maybe the others will start talking to you again."
"Maybe." It got quiet after that. REALLY quiet. The only sound there was was the sound of Takanori's sipping. And even that became softer. The savory aroma of the soup filled the air. The silence was suffocating me. I was about to go insane until a knock on the door was heard. I dashed to the door.
"Um, hey Akira san..."
"Hey yourself. If you're looking for Taka, he's in the kitchen."
"Could you tell him to come here please?" Nao asked.
"You can come in and join us. We made soup it's almost ready so you might as well stick around and have something to warm you up."
"Oh...thank you." He stepped inside, toeing off his shoes and hanging his coat up. I led him into the kitchen where Takanori was waiting.
"Who was at the door?" he aske,d not looking back to see for himself.
"Me." Nao said. Ruki turned with a smile. "I came home and saw you weren't there, so I figured this is where I'd fine you. I see you gave him the bracelet."
"Yeah. How'd you know I was here?"
"Where else could you go?" Nao asked, taking a seat at the table.
Takanori shrugged his shoulders and taps this fingers on the table. It once again fell silent. "I think the soup is ready." I said, breaking the silence. I grabbed three bowls and filled them with the homemade soup, making sure we all get the same amount. Well, I may have made sure to put less vegetables in mine.
I took the bowls over to the table and sat them infront of my guests before returning to the counter to get mine. They quietly thanked me and we ate. No one said a word. When we were done, I took our used dishes and washed them. "Akira, I have something for you in my car." Nao spoke.
He left the kitchen. For some reason, Takanori follwed him. I waited at the kitchen table. It took them a long time to get whatever it was. They were gone for minutes. Then there was yet another knock at the door. They probably locked themselves out. I ra to the door and opened it.
"SURPRISE! MERRY CHRISTMAS!" My heart nearly jumped out of my chest. I was startled out of my mind. But then I realized what was going on...ALL OF MY IDIOT FRIENDS WERE IN CAHOOTS.
comment: We all love those awkward visits from people we kind of hate. Especially unexpected visits. And we all love surprises. The same thing happened to me the past few days so I had to put it in fanfic form lol
