Maybe it's just me, but my biology readings for class today are just depressing. We're studying ecology and populations (the class is Evolution and Diversity), and today's lecture was on human influences.
The last known carrier pidgin died alone in the Cincinnati Zoo in 1914.
In the 1990's, a section of the Costa Rican rainforest on a remote mountainside was scheduled for clearcutting. Scientists rushed in, did a population survey, and discovered 90 epistemic species (species which are found NOWHERE else in the world.). This stretch of forest was destroyed not a year later.
The Japanese government's Institute of Cetacean Research relies on the selling of whale meat to fund it's "research" program. Now tell me, how does that figure out? You hunt an endangered species in a protected zone for "research" and then sell the meat, giving the government a nice tidy sum of the profits. Hmm... sounds very conservationist to me.
In other news I nailed out a schedule for next semester. Only 4 classes, but 16 credit hours worth.
