Summary: This is a different take on how Emma and Jenny met, after high school. Emma is a food critic and Jenny just happens to own a restaurant.

Emma and Hotte arrived at the restaurant at 7 o’clock. Emma was very glad to not see Caro around, knowing that she was fired. They took their seats and the waitress approached.

W: Good evening. My name is Wendy and I’ll be taking care of you this evening.

E: Hello Wendy. Could you let Ms. Hartman know that Emma Müller is here?

W: Absolutely.

The waitress turned and walked towards the kitchen.

H:Why did you tell her? I thought you were not supposed to tell the restaurants that you were the critic.

E: I’m not. I just feel so bad about what happened last time that I want to make sure she takes every precaution. She is a very nice woman.

H: Oh I see. Have you actually met her?

E: We have only spoken on the phone.

When Wendy arrived in the kitchen and told the chef that Emma Müller was in the dining room, Jenny became very nervous. Her food was great, she knew this. But receiving this second chance from this critic was not something she intended to screw up.

Emma and Hotte ordered their food and chatted while drinking their wine. Jenny was working to perfect their starters at that moment. She wanted to oversee each item to ensure it was up to her standards. When they were ready she sent Wendy out with the dishes and told her to come back immediately after they had tasted them. The plates were placed in front of Emma and Hotte and they began to eat.

E: Oh my god. This is incredible!

H: Mine is pretty amazing too.

They tasted each other’s dishes. Being friends for as long as they had meant they could just get food of off each others plate without any discussion. They were both amazed at each dish.

Wendy returned to the kitchen to inform Jenny that the critic and her boyfriend absolutely loved the starters.

J: Oh thank god. How are those mains coming?

Jenny turned and worked with her kitchen staff and finished the service for that table.

Emma and Hotte had an excellent meal.

E: That was so great. I guess the other time was all Caro.

H: Are you going to compliment the chef?

E: I’d like to but I don’t think I’m supposed to do that.

Meanwhile in the kitchen, Jenny got to a stopping point in service and decided to go say hello to Ms. Müller. She left the kitchen and walked towards the table. There were a few people standing in front of her so she could not see the couple. Suddenly every server blocking her path moved at once allowing Jenny to see the table. Jenny stopped dead in her tracks. The blonde before her was the most beautiful woman she’d ever seen. Jenny stood there several feet away from the table, not moving.

Emma and Hotte’s meal was complete and Emma leaned over to get her phone out of her bag to take notes. While doing this, she looked to her left and saw a brunette standing there. Eye contact was made and Emma simply stared at the woman with her mouth slightly ajar. This staring continued for several seconds before Hotte interjected.

H: Ems, close your mouth.

This shook Emma out of her stupor and she turned to Hotte.

E: Shut up.

Jenny slowly approached the table.

J: Emma Müller?

E: Yes.

Jenny reached out her hand to shake Emma’s.

J: I’m Jenny Hartman.

E: Oh hello! The food was absolutely delicious.

J: I’m so glad you enjoyed it and that nothing was spoiled this time.

E: Quite the contrary. It is absolutely perfect.

Jenny realized that Emma used the wrong tense and wondered if she was referring to something other than the food. She could only hope.

H: Hi, I’m Hotte.

This broke the eye lock and the girls had to release their extended handshake so Jenny could turn to Hotte and shake his hand.

J: I’m so glad you enjoyed the meal.

Jenny realized she could not just stand there as she had nothing to say. She knew all she would do was stare at the blonde and she didn’t want to make her and her boyfriend uncomfortable.

J: Well, I have to get back in to the kitchen. But it was a pleasure meeting you both.

With that, she turned back to Emma and locked eyes with her for several seconds before smiling and turning to head to the kitchen.

H: Damn, Emma. The chef is seriously hot!

E: She most certainly is.

H: I could definitely feel some chemistry there.

E: Me too. Wow.

H: Really? You could tell she liked me, even after those few seconds?

E: Uh huh.

Emma was barely listening to Hotte but quickly realized what he said.

E: Wait, what? You think she likes you?

H: It was so obvious.

E: Oh Hotte, you can’t really be that daft.

H: Are you saying she didn’t like me?

E: No, Hotte, she didn’t. Sorry.

Hotte was totally oblivious to what had just occurred between Emma and Jenny (or at least what Emma thought might have occurred) and this was fine with Emma. She was a private person and needed to figure it out for herself. Her friends knew she was gay but she had never actually had a girlfriend. No one had ever made her feel special. But this Jenny Hartman was definitely....interesting.
