so far i'm 2 for 3 for this endeavor. i'm really liking this approach so i thought i'd share a tid bit with you. i have further ideas where this one could go, but i'm leaving it as is for now, and moving on to something different tomorrow.

Is this like the musical version of nanowrimo?
My music player is being a wanker right now, so I will have to listen later, but good luck! :)

it sure is! some of my friends list had taken it upon themselves to declare Nov. NanoPhotoMo, and have vowed to shoot and post a new picture everyday. inspired, though not a shutterbug or a prolific writer, i decided to declare Nov. NaMuWriMo, and apply the same concept to music composition. i won't be posting everything i come up with, but i will share some.

thanks for the praise. i was actually thinking of adding a melodic line to the B section, but i think you're right that it makes for a nice break. the challenge will be to add a lead line that doesn't detract from that feeling of space.

I like it. And if for any of these days you'd like to get together for a quick melody/lyric write and really feel all inspired, you let me know, I'd love to do so :)

cool, thanks! sadly, my schedule is perpetually packed, so the most likely collaborative process right now would be for me to send you a piece and then you could brainstorm with it. once you have some ideas, we could go from there.

yay, fun!

Definitely haunting. Penumbral, I think.

oo good word. :) i feel like a lot of my stuff veers in this direction, so at some point i'd like to branch out stylistically. still, there's just something i like so much about dark chords and dissonant harmonies.

it's definitely got your signature dissonance. just curious, but do you compose just by sound or do you have a scale/chord seq/key in mind when you start?

i like this piece. i think the break in the middle is interesting - it's different enough from the theme to make you sit up and take notice, but similar enough stylistically to be right at home. are you writing pieces specifically for ENSMB, or just whatever instruments strike your fancy in the moment?

as far as how i compose, i do it a variety of different ways. often i get sounds in my head that i then try to work out 'on paper' and by noodling on the keyboard. this is definitely the most time consuming way to work, as i have something in mind already and need to translate it.

for this experiment though, i'm trying to emphasize speed and and being less deliberate and critical. so i'll just sort of arbitrarily choose a scale or a key and use that as a starting point. the fun part i've been doing so far is just throwing down a chord sequence or time signature or notating a rhythm pretty haphazardly and then building from there until i have something i like. it's really cool to watch it grow until it becomes something that resonates with me emotionally in some way.

all of this stuff is intended in some form for ENSMB and i'm operating off the band template that i use for scores, though at this point i'm not turning them into arrangements for the whole band.

this reminds me, i need to work on today's piece...
