I second Helmand. I haven't been back to Boston in 4 years but the next time I go, I'm going to Helmand. Also, I second Punjabi Dhaba. If she's as obsesses with ice cream as I am, she should try JP Licks (on Newbury St, among other places, I think).
My favorite restaurant to go to was India Samraat at 51 Mass Ave (on the Boston Side). Not too dive-y, and if I remember right, their Peshawari Paratha is amazing.
Also, if she's into folky, mellow, coffee-house music, Club Passim in Harvard Square usually books really good acts (often famous ones, as well, and if so, get there early.)
Oh yeah, I forgot. My dad used to stay in the Holiday Inn in Dedham, which wasn't too far away. Boston is wicked expensive, so I wish her luck. As I'm headed that way for a conference soon, if she finds a good & cheap place, I'd love to know!
Oh yeah, Buddha's delight, downtown, is a tasty vegan restaurant. And--MIKE'S PASTRIES. We used to walk from the coop (how cute) all 6 miles or whatever just to get those pastries. It's in the North End. SO GOOD.
