Lately I've been thinking about the Bobbsey Twins books. Remember those?
I was thinking about ways to get kids into reading young, and I was remembering staring at the covers of my sister's books, thinking how exciting they looked, and wishing like hell I could read. Then I realized that the books I specifically remember thinking this about was the Bobbsey Twins books. And that led to me remembering how much I loved them. Like, really really adored them.
They're among the few books I haven't reread as an adult because, I mean, they're crap, right? Total crap. Nancy Drew books were actually pretty good (because the ghost writer they landed on was fantastic) but the Bobbsey Twin books were just crap.
Only I'm wondering if I should try to get my hands on some and check them out. Because my memories of them are delightful.
(There are some old ones free on Gutenberg, etc., but all the older Bobbsey twin books were rewritten in the 60s--and it's pretty much anonymous that they were rewritten better--and those are the ones I'm remembering. The hardback ones with no dust jacket, just the picture covers and the lavender spine and backs)
Anyone else have good memories of these books? Or am I on the crack?
