Summary: “Now, tell me again why…” [possibly for the march 2004 hott_baguettes (LJ community) challenge. - standalone]

There’s a smile on my face when I see him walking by, waving at us and making some weird faces through the glass pane before he laughs and runs off to the other side of the street and pauses in front of the bakery there. Turning around, he grins and waves again before pushing the door open and stepping inside, disappearing from our view.
Someone is chuckling beside me as I turn to look at the smiling face staring at the other side of the street and shaking his head.

“Remind me again how we became friends with him?”

“You know, I should be asking you that. You knew him before I did.”

“Oh right, I presented him to you. Alright then, remind me WHY we’re friends with him again?”

“I honestly have no idea.”

A snort escapes Sebastien’s mouth before he yawns and goes back to stacking up the cans on the shelves. I watch him as he walks down the aisle a few minutes, picking up a box and strolling back to his previous spot. He looks back up at me.

“Now, tell me again why we’re working here?”

“You got me this job.”

“Right. Tell me why I’m working here then?”

“You need the money. You’re too lazy to look for another job. You have a good schedule here.”

“… mouais.”

“And your aunt is the owner of this store.”

“… en effet.” [... true.]

I roll my eyes and stare at the front door, willing for some customers to walk in because the place was completely deserted and it was boring as fuck. It’s a good thing Sebastien and I both had the same hours otherwise I would’ve been sleeping behind the counter.

I jump when the phone rings. Seb turns and stares at it.

“J’te gage dix piasses que c’est Bouvier.” [I’m betting you ten bucks that it’s Bouvier.]

“You can’t place a bet if no one disagrees with you.”

“… vrai.” [… true.]

I can’t hold back the snicker that escapes my lips as I finally pick up the telephone, rolling my eyes as Seb stares at me and waits.

“Bonjour, épicerie de David Desrosiers, la plus sexy créature terrestre que personne ne peut résister. Comment puis-je vous aidez?” [Hello, David Desrosiers’, the most sexy terrestrial creature that no one can resist, grocery store. How can I help you?]

Something hits my shoulder. I look down on the floor and there’s a banana lying there. Seb throws another one at me as I quickly catch it, preventing it from heading straight to my face. He shakes his head at me before returning to the rows of apples before him.

“… David?” I sit up quickly and the sudden motion attracts my co-worker’s attention back to me again as one of his eyebrow raises.

“Erm… Bonjour Agathe…” [Hi Agathe… (random female name, I don’t know Seb’s family, heh.)]

Sebastien’s eyes widen and he starts laughing loudly. “Elle est bonne, celle-là, man.” [That one was good, man.]

I glare at him before continuing. “C’était une blague, m’dame.” [It was a joke, m’am.] A female laugh on the other end of the line answers my apology.

“C’est correct, mon garcon. Je voulais juste savoir comment tout allait.” [It’s fine, my boy. I just wanted to know how everything was going.]

“Parfait. Plutôt calme pour l’instant.” [Perfect. Rather calm right now.]

“Bien. Toi et mon neveu continuez votre bon travail et je vous verrai plus tard. Bye!” [Good. You and my nephew keep up the good work and I’ll see you later.]

“Oui, Agathe. Bye!” I hang up the phone and look up to see a smirking friend staring at me.

“You would’ve lost the fucking bet, you know.”

“Couldn’t have lost if nobody disagreed.” I want to wipe that grin off his face.

“I-” And the phone rings again. Seb shrugs and waits for me to answer.

“Oui Agathe?”

“Is that my new name in bed?”

Blink at the phone.

“Aaaaallllooooooooooo?”

“Ouais, j’suis là.” [Yeah, I’m here.]

“Ha. Daydreaming about me again?”

“Non.”

“You don’t even think of me sometimes?”

“Oh, alright. But only once a day.”

“Only once? What-”

“24 hours a day.”

“Corny.” Seb snickers.

“That was cute. Anyways, you wanna do anything later? Just you and me?”

“Sure.”

“Alright. A nice romantic picnic at the park maybe? Souper à la française? Accompanied by the traditional warm golden baguettes, of course, can’t forget them. Wouldn’t be French without those.”

“Let me guess… you’re baking some right now.”

“You know me too well.”

“You work in a fucking bakery across the street. What is there to know?”

“I have to remind that this is the fucking BEST bakery with THE BEST baguettes because they are made with love.”

“In other words, made by you. Only gives customers another reason to buy everything but your baguettes at the bakery and to buy those goddamn things HERE instead.”

“Mais toi tu les aimes!” [But you like them!]

“Correction, I like YOU. That’s different.”

“How could you NOT love my baguettes? They’re the only reason why I work here!”

“They hired you mainly to work at the cash.”

“… Right.”

“Chérie? J’ai un client. I’ll see you tonight.” [Sweetie? I have a customer.]

“Alright. Love you.”

“Je m’aime aussi.” [I love me too.]

“Hey!”

“And I love you too.”

“C’est mieux. Bye.” [That’s better.]

[…]

Five minutes later and the place is empty again, save for me and Sebastien. It’s a good thing he’s my best friend, otherwise I probably would’ve been sick of him by now.

“Tell me again why it’s so fucking empty right now?” I sigh. He gets annoying whenever there’s nothing to do.

“We’re early in the afternoon.”

“Then tell me why it’s so empty when we’re on a Saturday?”

“… as I said, it’s still early afternoon. People are probably still eating lunch right now.”

“… right.” He trudges over and hops on the counter, looking down at where I was sitting on my stool.

With his feet dangling on the other side of where I was and a lollipop in his mouth, he reminds me of a little kid. He hands me another lollipop from the front pocket of his hoodie and I accept with a grin. Sebastien can be quite cute when he wants to be… if we weren’t already both taken we would’ve probably fell in love with each others.

Or maybe not. We’re too close. Dating him would be practically like dating my sister. Only he would be my brother, yeah. Um… I understand myself.

The front door, a few feet away from the cash register where we are sitting at, quickly opens and in steps a flustered guy, clutching a long paper bag in his hands. He pauses for a few seconds and pants. Sebastien and I just stare at him.

Suddenly he looks up, bright eyed, and smiling mischievously, walks over and stops beside Seb before leaning down and soundly kissing me on the lips. Straightens up and lightly nudges my co-worker’s shoulder before turning around and striding back towards the door.

“Fresh out the oven, still warm, don’t wait too long to eat them. Better get back. Boss will throw a fit for leaving without warning her. Love you David, bye Seb.”

Door closes behind him as we watch him run down the few steps and cross the street running. We then gape at the bag he dropped on the counter.

Seb then giggles and pulls out the long sticks of bread that’s in there, still soft and warm. Breaks one in two and hands me a half. Throws his candy in the trash bin under the counter, hops off, walks away and comes back quickly after with cream cheese and two bottles of ice tea, before resting his ass back to where it was previously.

He pushes the telephone towards me, still grinning, and I roll my eyes. Scary how we can seem to read each others’ minds so well sometimes.

“Allo Davy.”

“Thanks.”

“C’est rien. I do make good baguettes!” [It’s nothing.]

“Yes you do.”

“You’re enjoying it, aren’t you? Devouring it, yes.” I can almost see the devilish smirk on his face.

“Actually-”

“And with cream cheese! Also quenching your thirst with ice tea.”

“Would you stop spying on us? I can see you looking at us à l’autre côté de la rue!” [… on the other side of the street!]

“Alright, alright, I have to get back to work anyway, Patrick is nagging me. Love you Dahveed.”

“J’t’aimes aussi, Pierre. A tantôt.” [Love you too Pierre. See you later.]

Seb is still giggling as I put down the phone, and eagerly dipping his piece of bread into the cream cheese before taking a bite.

“Sébas! Laisse moi s’en, colisse!” [Leave me some, dammit!]

“So tell me again why you’re dating him?”

“Il fait des bonnes baguettes.” [He makes good baguettes.]

“Warm and soft on the inside, hard and crispy on the outside, not too mention rather lengthy too, just like you like ‘em, hein?”

I smack him hard behind the head.

“Ow! Right, alright, you prefer his baguette to the ones he makes then!”

Smack him again. He proceeds to whining.

“J’te niaise!!!” [I was kidding!!!]

“T’es en manque, fuck.” [You’re in need, fuck. (think perverted, people.)]

“… So, remind me again how you ever met him?”

“… You presented us, Sébas.”

“True. How did we know each others again?”

“Jeff.”

“Oh. Right. Still, explain to me again why you’re dating Pierre?”

“Same reason as to why you’re dating Chuck.”

“… I hate it how you always seem to point out the obvious whenever I ask you a question.”

“Why am I best friend with you again?”

“… Give me back my freakin’ lollipop.”

“No and finish Pierre’s baguette.”

“Which one?”

“… Shut up and eat the bread, Seb.”
