Afghan Star is on!
I am thrilled - I have been waiting for this documentary to be on ever since I saw it on the HBO roster. I'd read articles about the show in the past, and then I heard about the documentary and I couldn't find a torrent for it. So I'm really excited to finally see it - especially from the beginning.
Afghan Star, for those who don't know, is a show in Afghanistan essentially with the formula of American Idol, Pop Idol, and Nouvelle Star. That's especially significant because music, dancing, and television were all banned under the Taliban rule. For a television show to come out celebrating all those things, is really a great sense of stride and most certainly has a huge effect on it's viewing audience.
It's great to see the huge variation of people there; those living in gorgeous apartments, rural kids wide-eyed at the TV, older farmers smiling at the return, etc. Really nice, really fascinating.
Documentaries are a great way to learn about different regions. Conflicts sound stilted and serious on paper, but seeing an Israeli woman and a Palestinian woman groan about dieting together is a different feel from even the best article. Seeing people flop down on couches, and cooking dinner makes them realer than any news report can ever do. I am grateful that my mother had me watching kid's documentaries from a little kid, because I feel like it shaped how I viewed the world ever since.
