And friend of mine recently asked me to explain the Occupy Wall Street movement to her since she was having difficulty grasping what it was because the media wasn't explaining it very well. Here was my response ( Read more... )

Very cool. I'm going to churn out one of the political rants you've been reading in my lj for years for the Occupied Wall Street Journal.

Very interesting. I'd only heard about the movement in passing as I've been out of the news loop lately. Very informative.

Leaderless, that is true democracy in the Greek sense actually. They used to ostracize individuals who became too powerful for fear they'd corrupt the democracy.

It certainly is an outcry movement and those things are always fascinating. I certainly sympathize with the movement.

It's funny that you mention Ancient Greece, because at one point, on my most recent visit (last night), I was sitting down on the ground in a circle with other people listening to someone speak on communism which then went into a discussion and I was like "Wow, this reminds me of Ancient Greece when people would sit in the park discussing politics and philosophy together and learn from each other."

It is a very fascinating movement and worth checking out if you have a chance.

Actually, it reminds me more of the Assembly, not a symposium. Though admittedly the difference between the two is fairly small.

I know little of Greek history, let alone any other. Sadly, I suffer for a lack of a good education in history, politics and economics. But this movement has truly spraked an interest in me for those subjects now and I have been actively trying to learn all I can. It's quite exciting.

I am glad you found it helpful.
For an update for you, many trouble makers are now starting to take up residence at the Occupy Wall Street protest - people who have come to cause trouble and eat the free food provided. It has been drawing a bad crowd which is making the movement look bad and seem like there are alot of low lifes in the movement, which simply isn't true - it's just a bunch of low lifes trying to leech off the movement and cause trouble. It's a real shame. The OWS security team is currently working with the NYPD on monitoring and controlling the situation. Also, due to the bad early winter weather conditions that are moving in, it has been estimated that 20% of the occupants have left. Demands wise, an official Demands Committee group has been formed and is working together in an attempt to create a list of demands that all occupants can agree on. If you have any questions, please feel free to ask.
