Matsuda asks Light, one day during a small lag in the investigation, why it is that L doesn’t blink. It’s very weird, he adds, and he knows that blinking is essential for keeping one’s eyes moist. He wonders how Ryuzaki’s eyes aren’t balls of crumbling sand by now.

“It’s not that he doesn’t blink.” Light answers, his own eyes growing slightly wide with his words, as though he wanted nothing more than to be asked this particular question just so he could respond with the words that follow. “It’s that he waits until he’s sure no one is looking. Then he blinks, sometimes in rapid succession just to make up for the time in which he doesn’t blink. Ryuzaki is very tricky in that way, Matsuda. He makes things appear much more complicated and fantastical than they really are.”

“No.” Mogi sighs from across the room, his fingers typing away quickly on his keyboard. “I wouldn’t be surprised if he really doesn’t blink.”

“Matusda-san, Mogi-san…Light-kun.” Matsuda is sure that Ryuzaki makes it a point to refer to Light by his first name to prove some kind of point. Something to do with dominance. He read a book on it once. “Why is it that you all insist on not only speaking about me as though I am not present, but speculate on things amongst each other that you could easily ask me?” The pad of his thumb rubs against his bottom lip before slipping into his mouth. He does not turn around.

“Why don’t you just answer then?” Light taunts, never once looking up from his own screen.

“Answer what, Light-kun?”

“Matsuda asked why it is you don’t blink. I insist, no, I know you do. So please tell the poor man that you do so he’s not under the impression that you’re some sort of inhuman creature.”

“He doesn’t blink.” Mogi insists from his position.

“Matsuda-san.” L finally turns around, pushing his chair by pressing the palm of his right hand against the lip of the desk that houses his computer. “I don’t blink.” A smile graces his normally emotionless features and Matsuda can’t help but become very uncomfortable from the way Ryuzaki’s mouth looks when it’s doing anything besides consuming sweets.
