Thoughts about Saint Seiya: The Lost Canvas

I have finished watching the two seasons of Saint Seiya: The Lost Canvas and I think I can say it is among one of the best things I watched this year (and I wasn't even expecting too much of it). It makes me really sad knowing that there isn't going to be a third season for it because the two first seasons were so good.

First of all, I must say that I had watched pretty much everything that belongs to the Saint Seiya series so far (except for the Hades saga, which I'm watching right now, and Omega, which I'm not really in the mood to watch). It was one of the few things aired on TV that I really liked when I was younger, so I watched the whole Sanctuary arc, the whole Asgard arc, the whole Poseidon arc... and I also believe I watched all the movies. Turns out I grew up and I lost my interest in the series, not to mention the fact that I don't think it aged very well.

I don't know what made me want to watch The Lost Canvas. I had gotten the two available seasons with one of my work colleagues and it had been sitting for a while in my PC. One day I just asked tiuneo if he wanted to buddy-watch it and so we did.

I'm not sure if people who did not watch the classical series will like it, since it does have its share of saudosism. Still, TLC does a lot of things so much better! I absolutely loved all of the Gold Saints. It was so good to see them fighting for what they were supposed to! Aries Shion is still kinda boring, though a bit better than Aries Mu. I'd say Taurus Hasgard is on the same level that Taurus Aldebaran (hm... perhaps a bit higher). Cancer Manigoldo is SO. MUCH. BETTER. than Cancer Deathmask. Virgo Asmita... hm. I actually like Virgo Shaka better. Libra Dohko was so much cooler when he was young and rebelious. Sagitarius Sisyphus was kinda meh for me, but still a bit better than Sagitarius Aioros (specially because we don't see Aioros in action). Capricorn El Cid was so cool!! I loved him to pieces, though I don't think I can compare him to Capricorn Shura. Pisces Albafica was probably my absolutely favorite (along with Cancer Manigoldo and Capricorn El Cid), comparing him to Pisces Aphrodite doesn't even seem to be fair. As for Scoprio Kardias, Leo Regulus and Aquarius Degel, I can't really say much about them since they did not fight. As for Gemini Aspros and Gemini Defteros, I don't think they showed up in the series (I had to Google their names), but while I'm not the biggest fan of Gemini, I read a bit about the duality of Aspros and Defteros' personalities and got really interested in their story.

This is another thing about The Lost Canvas that I loved so much: the fact that every Gold Saint had their own stories. Aries Shion is the one we know the least about, but all other characters have their own problems and motivations, and this is absolutely awesome! We can finally see the Gold Saints as something more than random background elements that use flashy powers.

Another characteristic that I really liked about it was the fact that the girls are not damsels. Even Sasha, who happens to be less of a fighter is very useful (no, Saori, nobody likes you). Crane Yuzuriha is a beautiful Jamir human being who kicks butts and saves people, Pandora is pretty much leading the whole infernal empire (though so far I like Hades saga's Pandora better than TLC's Pandora)... but my favorite one is Athena before Sasha. Seriously. That Athena beat Hades, Hypnos and Thanatos pretty much single-handedly, it was beautiful. I did not imagine I would ever see girls kicking butts in a Saint Seiya series (not to say anything about Ophiucus Shaina and Eagle Marin, but I honestly don't think any of them got even close to Crane Yuzuriha).

Weirdly enough, I really liked Alone/Hades. I read a couple of spoilers about him (since there will be no third season anyway (.__.)) and I have to say I'm pretty happy with the way things ended. I also fell for Bennu Kagaho because of the implications about him later on.

I liked The Lost Canvas. In fact, no, I think I can say I LOVED The Lost Canvas. If ever get the time to do so, I'll try to find the mangas and see what happened after the second season was over.
