tip. Don't even try to use this effect on dark pictures, you will end with
this. Doesn't look nice, does it? Curves and hue/saturation bring in lots of red shades, so I recommen you to use it on pale and bright pictures. You will see why, while I explain you it steo by step.
I started with screencap from "Angus, thongs and perfect snogging" (great movie and great book series, by the way ;) ). I cropped it, resized and sharpened a bit. Now I've got my base.
1. layers >> nw adjustment layer >> curves. My photo is very, very pail. Curves layer will make colours more vibrant.
RGB: 58 > 33, 104 > 115
Red: 40 > 48, 153 > 143, 195 > 204
Green: 156 > 147
Blue: 50 > 48, 160 > 135
>>
2. layers >> new adjustment layer >> brightness/contrast. It helps in brightening the icon and preparing it mainly for color balance layer.
brightness: 4
contrast: -34
>>
3. Gosh, where have all of the coors gone?! It looks awful. Don't worry. We're going to fix it right now. Make color balnce layer.
midtones: 20, -5, -7
shadows: 27, -2, -10
highlights: -2, 7, 5
>>
4. I think it's too dark at the moment. I will lighten it using #e3cde3. I set it to Soft Light 100%.
>>
5. Ugh, still doesn't look well. Levels layer is going to erase pink/red shadows.
RGB: 34, 155, 255
Red: 0, 146, 247
Green: 0, 123, 248
Blue: 0, 131, 255
>>
6. Almost last step. Colors are not very saturated as I wish them to be so I make hue/saturation layer.
SATURATION
reds: 34
yellows: 23
>>
7. Optional step. Duplicate your base, drag it on the top and set this layer to Soft Light about 60%. It darknes icon a bit.
