All Grown up

Its been literally years since I've written in my live journal...I can't believe I remembered my password.

I'm all grown up now, with the love-of-my-life, in college getting an education, and finally confident in who I am...which brings me to the first subject of my random blog.

In having "found myself" after a long period of soul searching I've come to the conclusion that I am an atheist, or rather agnostic-atheist.  And as some may have heard, recently in an interview our oh-so-wonderful governor Mitch Daniels made a statement condemning atheism. Saying, and I quote "Atheism leads to brutality.  All the horrific crimes of the last century were committed by atheists-Stalin and Hitler and Mao and so forth-because it flows naturally from an idea that there is no judgment and there is nothing other than the brief time we spend on this earth." I have a few things I'd like to say about his statements in this interview.

First off, Governor Daniels, if you're going to make a blatantly derogatory toward any group of people or condemning any specific thing, please, do your research first.  1. You make yourself sound like the idiot that you are, and 2. you make the people of Indiana sound like idiots for electing you (I am happy to say I did not vote for you).  Our country was not founded on Christianity, as much as so many people would like to believe that our founding fathers were all Christian, it simply is not the case.  Don't believe me, look it up. I'd go on, but I'm sure that anyone who might possibly read this has heard both sides of the argument before, and either already knows the truth, or is contented to remain in their own state ignorance.  And as far as atheism leading to brutality that's absurd! but I'll go on about that in a moment.  Atheists are not responsible for all horrific crimes of the last century the Holocaust...not us. Hitler, despite what our ignorant governor might think, was NOT an atheist, but a catholic man.

Secondly, Christianity (or any religion for that matter) does not equal morality.  You can be a moral person and be a part of a religion, but you can also be an immoral person and be part of a religion. Or a moral person and believe in nothing, which I like to think I am.  Personally speaking, my time being as limited as I believe it to be motivates me to cherish every moment, making life easier for others when I can.  I am not motivated by some fear of punishment, or anticipation of a reward, but if for nothing else, than to make my life feel more fulfilling. The time limit that I feel is set for me, makes that more important, not less, and most atheists that I know feel the same way.

All in all, our governor is a moron.  But we all knew that.  I've never expected much from him.

Just before the last election "My Man Mitch" came into a restaurant, where my friend was working as a waitress, with a large party.  They were rude, and to make things worse, left absolutely no tip.  After the fact, Daniels wrote my friend a letter.  Saying it was a mix up, that there had been a miscommunication among "his people" and no tip was left, he asked her not to go public with it, offering her whatever amount of money she felt suitable (a bribe?) and thanking her for her vote.  Obviously he did not receive her vote, or that of many people she knows.  It is in instances like this that we see how much this politician really cares about the people he governs.  I am disappointed, not only that a person in his position is that in consideration, but that the people that he doesn't give a shit about, have voted him into office.

Well, I'm out of time, so this rant is over. But that's probably for the best...there's probably no one that will read this anyway.
