The first arrival almost went unnoticed. Scout just happened to catch a glimpse of a figure on the road outside as he ran past the main gate in mid-battle, and he backpedalled to look. "Hey, guys," he said over his radio, "there's somebody walkin' out here."
"What's some mad bugger doing, waltzing all the way out here?" muttered Sniper (doing anything BUT muttering would be pointless, since Scout was the only one with a microphone). He scanned the field until he located his teammate, then zoomed past him into the usually-empty bare fields and dirt road that stretched for miles between the base and the nearest town. Well, there certainly was somebody out there. Probably been in a car wreck or something, the poor sod - looked a bloody mess, literally.
Meanwhile Scout had stopped to stare, his attention easily diverted by something new. "Hey, fagnuts, what the hell do you think you're doin' out here? Kinda far for a fuckin' Sunday walk, ain't it?"
The pedestrian stopped the aimless wandering at the sound of the shouting voice, pausing for a moment before breaking into a surprisingly-fast sprint. As the distance closed, the figure became clearer - a woman in jeans and a t-shirt, blood streaked over her face, wild-eyed. She slammed into the bars of the gate at full force, shrieking and gibbering.
Scout stepped back, just out of range of her clawing arms. "Ooooookaaaaaaay. Medic, you might wanna come have a look here. I think this is fucked up."
I'm thinking Medic sedates her and gets her into the infirmary (complaining all the while that he is not trained to be a country doctor); he thinks it's rabies but the only way to test for that is to drill a hole and extract a brain sample, which everybody says he can't do, because she's a civilian. While they're debating this she comes out from the sedation and bites Medic, who turns; there is brief havoc before somebody just yells "SHOOT HIM! JUST SHOOT HIM, HE'LL RESPAWN!" They do so, he respawns just fine, meanwhile they've managed to subdue the victim again. They try to contact somebody outside to get her to a civvie hospital or something, but they can't. They're cut off - phones aren't working, nothing's working. They can get onto the police scanner frequency with a radio, but it's being overwhelmed with reports of riots and violence and such, and they can't get any useful information out. They end up effectively under seige for a while, until two things happen in some order: 1) for some reason respawn goes down, removing their invulnerability to the infection, and 2) the infected breach the walls of the base.
1) It starts with the lights flickering, then browning out before they die completely. It doesn't take long before the lights in the infirmary are out too. Respawn stays up for a little while thanks to battery backup, but they all feel it when it dies - a subtle hum in the air, noticeable only by its sudden absence. Engineer tries to radio in to the Turbine that powers their base, but there's no answer. They're proper fucked.
When the base is overrun, RED Engie drops first. RED Pyro goes after him - wading into the horde with his flamethrower, roaring behind his mask, gone mad with the fire. When the teams are thinned down to the last bare remnants, just three BLUs and two REDs, it takes the concerted efforts of four of them to keep the BLU Pyro from doing the same thing - they have to physically force him into the nearest respawn room, which has a steel door they can lock in place to barricade themselves inside.
They huddle together: BLU's Pyro, Scout and Spy, RED's Soldier and I'm not sure who else (Engie wants me to write Demolady because I can't write a canon Demo :V). Scout gets cabin fever and leaves to "go shoot some fuckers." Comes back bit. Soldier puts him down. So the last four of them are there, at the end of all things.
And they need to leave, to find food and to find rescue - there'll be no shelter there any longer.
