Kate and Allie: 80s lesbians?
So I'm killing time watching Kate & Allie on netflix, and I come across this:
The Landlady: (1984)
When their landlady finds out that there are two families living in Kate's household, she promptly raises the rent ... prompting Kate and Allie to pretend they're lesbian lovers so they'll qualify as one family.
Huh. Really? In 1984, you had to pretend to be gay in New York? Hmmm.....
Seriously, though, I'm sure this was a Very Special Episode and all that. Does anyone remember this actually airing, and if they caught shit for it? It's just such a mainstream show, and this was the Reagan era. I mean, they use the word lover repeatedly, and at the end they show gay couples dancing together. Huh.
And we STILL ban gay marriage.
