It's confirmed: Free Entry for Cosplayers for AFA
Met up with Haruko (and Aemi and Nadiah and Wendy and my colleague Zhen Qin) for the Animation Nation screenings of Studio 4C's Genius Party Beyond and Production I.G's Musashi documentary yesterday night and had a blast. Haruko reminded me about asking whether cosplayers go in for free again this year for AFA (it's not on their official website but I read it in one of the affiliated blogs) so I sent an email today.

Can I enquire whether there are any other ticketing options for cosplayers for this year’s AFA, like how it was for AFA ’08 when cosplayers could get free entry after registering? I have been unable to find the information on the AFA official websites, but one of the affliated blogs mentioned something to the effect that registered cosplayers could have free entry again this year, and I just wanted to confirm this fact. Highly appreciate it if you could help to clarify this fact. Thank you.

So it would seem like cosplayers should be able to go in for free after all. Now to figure out how to cancel a pre-order... Incidentally pre-orders are open already of course.
