nikuta aka Nina-chan, happy birthday!!! XDDD
The street is still the same as when he left the town. He loves it, when the cherry blossom trees along the street start to turn pink, welcoming the spring beautifully. Here, was his favorite park, and still be his favorite now. The weather starts to be warmer and warmer. Seems to be friendly for his recent condition.
As he walks to see the small lake that was his favorite spot to date, the wind blows quite strong. His hat drops. He bends down to take it and put it back on his head. Suddenly, a scarf hits his face. The man groans and take the scarf that covers his masker covered face. A pink handmade scarf is on his hands now. He turns his head to the right and to the left to see who the owner of that scarf is. But he sees no one. Maybe the scarf blew hard by the strong wind. He decides to keep the scarf with him in case that he meets the owner of that scarf.
The man starts to walk again toward the lake while coughing. Something disturbs his mind and worsens the slight fever he has. The scarf reminds him of something his girlfriend used to make for him. At Christmas 6 years ago before he left the town, his girlfriend gave him her handmade scarf. But it wasn’t as neat as the pink scarf he just found. His girlfriend was a clumsy girl who couldn’t do girlies things perfectly. She was still learning about how to be a good girl when he decided to break her up and left her. And now he regrets it.
The small lake is still the same too. It’s quiet there, and creates a relaxing atmosphere for its surrounding. The color of the water mixed with the glimmering of sunlight. And the warm breeze makes him want to stay there for a moment. He sits there, wants to recall his past. The lake was the witness of how romantic the relationship he built with his girl was. But yeah, he cursed himself for leaving.
When he just merely closes his eyes to recall the memories, the sound of someone stepped on a branch surprises him. He turns his head to see a girl with confused look on her face is walking toward him, seems to look for something. He stands up and approaches the girl.
“Is it yours?” He bends down and asks the girl while showing the scarf. The girl sets her little eyes on him, and it makes the man’s eyes widened. He feels familiar with the eyes the girl have.
The girl opens her mouth. “Ah! Yes! That’s mine!” The man gives the scarf to her while staring at her face. “Thank you for keeping it.” The girl shows her smile, and it reminds the man of someone.
“Yuri…” The man mumbles and the girl seems to be surprised. She blinks. The man notices the change of the girl’s expression. “Do you know Chinen Yuri?”
“How can you know my mom?” She points at Yamada, but immediately covers her mouth. The man stares at the girl with his eyes opened wide.
“Chinen Yuri… is your mom?” He asks with blank expression. The girl still covers her mouth, refusing to answer. The man doesn’t bother to ask the same question. “Then who’s your father? And where are they?”
The girl shakes her head. “Mama and Papa forbid me to talk with strangers. Although you’ve helped me, but still, you’re strangers.” The girl says stubbornly.
“I’m Yamada Ryosuke, an old friend of Chinen Yuri, your mom. Now, mind to tell me?” Yamada asks again. The girl shakes her head.
“No. I won’t tell you anything else.” She shakes her head.
Yamada flashes a bitter smile behind his masker. The stubbornness the little girl has is undoubtedly from his Yuri’s gen. And the scarf the girl has is probably the handmade of Yuri too. So now she has had her own family. A husband, and a daughter that resembles her. Looking from the girl’s appearance and height, Yamada assumes that she’s 5 years old. Maybe not too long after he left Yuri, she decided to forget him and married someone else in her young age. It hurts just to imagine that.
“You’re an obedient child ne. Your parents must be very proud of you.” Yamada pats the girl’s head. The girl finally smiles again.
“Yeah. They love me so much, and I love them so much. Mama and Papa told me to be a good child.” She says proudly.
“So now, where are they? Are you alone in this park?” Yamada asks.
The girl shakes her head. “Mama and Papa brought me here to take a walk. But when I was running to catch a squirrel, suddenly the naughty wind blew my scarf, and… I don’t know where I am now.” The girl answers innocently while shrugs her shoulder. She gets lost, but doesn’t feel that it’s a big problem.
She really reminds Yamada of Yuri. His Yuri has the same confident. Always be confident in every time. It’s a strong point of her that made Yamada fell in love with her. But now she’s someone else’s.
“Want me to help you?” Yamada offers. The girl shakes her head.
“No, thanks. Mama told me not to have interaction with stranger.”
Yamada chuckles and coughs again. This girl is really stubborn.
“But you will get lost if you search them alone.”
“I’ll wait for them here. I’m sure they’ll look for me, because they love me. And Papa said, whenever I get lost, I just have to stay still, and they’ll absolutely find me.” The girl sits down in the grass, then playing with her scarf.
Yamada takes a glance at her, and then sits beside her. “I’ll accompany you until your parents come. I want to meet them too.”
The girl looks at him with narrowed eyes. “Do you want to meet them to get Papa’s signature too?” She asks.
“Eh?”
“Whenever we go, people always come to us and ask for Papa’s signature, or take a photo with Papa.”
Now Yamada gets a clue that Yuri married with someone famous. Yeah, she deserves that. She’s a multitalented girl. The most genius and prettiest he has ever met. And he doesn’t deserve to get her. A failed football player who ever dumped her doesn’t deserve her.
“No. I just want to see your mom and your dad.”
“They are the best parents and couple. Mama is pretty, and Papa is handsome.” The little girl says in excitement.
“Yeah, your mom is the most beautiful girl I’ve ever seen.” Yamada says and releases a deep breath.
“Deshou ne?” The girl seems to be proud. “Papa ever said that he’s the luckiest man in the world, for getting Mama, and getting me too!”
Yamada sighs and looks down. He agrees with the little girl’s statement. Her dad must be the luckiest, for getting Yuri. If he didn’t leave Yuri to get the sport scholarship 6 years ago, maybe he would be that luckiest man.
He thought that the biggest luck and happiness he got was when a teacher offered him the scholarship abroad. Because of it, he decided to put all of his attention on football, broke up with Yuri, and left her. But now what he got? He lost his precious girl. More, he lost the chance to be a pro football player because he broke his legs and causing a permanent bad effect for his legs, and it’s impossible to be a football player anymore with that condition.
“And mama said the same too. She said that she’s the luckiest woman in the world because she got Papa and me.” The girl continues, and it makes Yamada feels the bitterness again. Now he really wants to shout to the world that Yuri used to love him. Used to. From the girl’s statement, he can assume again, that Yuri loves his husband so much. She loves her family that much. And he isn’t a part of her life anymore, like what it used to be.
“Your mom loves your dad so much ne.” Yamada says bitterly. The girl nods excitedly.
“Of course. They share kiss every morning, and Papa spoilt Mama so much. He even ate the burnt food Mama cooked! After it, he got a stomachache. But he still smiled to Mama. After it, Mama tried everyday to be able to cook properly because she didn’t want to see Papa groaned in pain anymore, and now, she even able to make me bento everyday.” The girl explains and grins proudly. She even forgets that her parents forbid her to talk with strangers. Maybe it’s because she’s too proud with her parents, that she can’t hold herself not to talk about them.
Yamada now can feel the jealousy creeps in his heart even more. He feels envy to the man that make Yuri tries her best, just to cook for him. He knows very well, that Yuri was suck at cooking. She even always refused it whenever Yamada asked her to make bento, or any food for him. But now, looks like the love she has to her husband is bigger than her love for him.
“Someday I want to be as pretty as mama, and be a star like papa.” The girl says again in glittering eyes, showing how serious she is with her sentence.
“Your papa is an actor eh?” Yamada asks to get more information. The girl nods. And Yamada connects it with her sentences before, that people even come to him to get his signature.
“Yep. A famous one. That’s why he’s so busy everyday. But he always come home before night, and still plays with me!!!”
Yamada nods. “Sou ka. So you want to be a famous star like him ne.”
“Of course! Papa also said that I have talent to be an actress, and I can be a great one.”
Yamada smiles. “Do you want to be a singer too? You have a cute voice. Your mama can sing beautifully too deshou?” He remembers how much Yuri loves singing. And he really loves her voice.
The girl shakes her head. “No. I got bad scores at singing although Papa and Mama can sing well.”
Yamada frowns and stares at the little girl. “Eh? Maji?”
“Yeah. I wish I can sing beautifully, but I can’t.” The girl looks to show sadness. Yamada pats her head.
“Are you sad?” The girl smiles to Yamada.
“Yeah. A little. But Papa told me, maybe singing isn’t my talent. And he said I can act in the school drama well. So maybe I have talent in acting. He told me not to give up discovering my real talent.” The girl grins.
“I’m sure you can reach your dreams to be an actress, little girl.” Yamada gives his thumb up to the little girl.
“Thank you oji-chan.” The girl gives him a cute smile that reminds him of Chinen. “And how about you, oji-chan? Where’s oba-chan?” The girl asks innocently, and the innocence kills Yamada’s heart. He coughs, and then smiles bitterly.
“Ne listen.” Yamada inhales deeply before releases it again. “I used to have a girl that supposed to be oba-chan now. I love her until now. So much. But yet I can’t say that to her again. It’s too late and I don’t deserve second chance because I’ve left her, and she is now with someone else. I think it’s the best for her. She has got someone that’s better than me.” Yamada says while gulping every pain that abruptly comes to his heart. “Haha. Just ignore me, little girl. I know it’s silly to tell it to you but…”
“Different!” Yamada can’t continue because the little girl cuts his sentences. And Yamada looks at her with frown plastered.
“Eh? What?”
“It’s different from what Mama told me, oji-chan.” The girl looks at Yamada, and he can spot a bit of sadness there. “Mama told me something when I have a fight with Sara-chan and said to her I don’t want to be her friend again. But after it, I realize that I still want to be friend with her, because she’s sooooo kind to me. Mama told me, that everyone deserves their second chance, even a second chance for me to be friend again with Sara-chan. As long as they mean it, then also willing to try to be better, something great will wait for them. And it’s not late yet to say sorry to Sara-chan. Mama said, when someday I can’t meet Sara-chan anymore and I haven’t said what I want to say to her, it will be the most regretful thing on my life. And because of it, I can say sorry to Sara-chan, and we became best friend again!” The girl is now smiling warmly.
That stabs Yamada’s heart strongly. It reminds him of how he wants to say ‘I love you’ and ‘Sorry’ to Yuri. He really wants Yuri to know that he still loves her so much although she has already loved someone else. But can he still say that when she has got a husband and even a daughter? Is it the way too late? If it’s not too late, he really wants to get the second chance.
“Ah the squirrel!” The little girl suddenly shouts and stands up. She looks at a direction while pointing. Yamada looks at her with surprised look. “Wait for me!” She immediately runs away to catch the squirrel.
“Hey! Wait!” Yamada stands up, and is about to chase her when suddenly the strong wind blows again, makes him coughing. “Why does the wind turn strong suddenly?” He groans. “Ah! Yuri’s daughter!” Suddenly Yamada remembers that he has to chase the girl before she gets lost again. He looks at the direction where the girl runs toward, but she has disappeared from his sight. “Geez… She runs so fast!” He chuckles.
But as he wants to take a step, suddenly something hits his head from behind. Yamada groans. He takes the thing that hits him, and finds that it’s another scarf. And as he looks at the scarf, his eyes get widen since he knows the owner perfectly. It’s the scarf he used to give to a girl who gave him her handmade scarf 6 years ago. The girl he always waits for.
“Gomennasaiiii!” Yamada can hear a girl’s voice, and sound of her running towards him. Yamada can just stand blankly there without turning his body. Now he can hear the panting of the girl. “Hhh… Gomennasai… hhh… the wind blew my scarf and it hit you right?”
Yamada doesn’t say anything, but he just turns his body with indescribable feeling flowing on his heart. And he can see the shock on the girl’s expression as she sees him from the front. A cute expression that he longs to see. Although some years have passed, she’s still looked the same. A lovely girl that he loves so much.
“Ryo…suke…” The girl says with her eyes opened wide. Yamada stares at her eyes, and she stares back at him.
“Long times not see you, Yuri. How are you?” Yamada pretends not to be excited. The girl in front of him is no longer his, and he can’t show her his excitement to meet her again.
“I’m… fine. And… how are… you?” Yuri stutters and then bites her lower lip.
“Today I’m not that healthy. As you can see, I have a slight fever and it makes me have to wear this masker.” He tries to speak normally, as if nothing has happened.
Yuri looks at him with worry expression, but she can say nothing. The awkward silence covers them for a while. “And you have to wear this scarf again before you catch a cold. It’s still cold here ne.” Yamada walks closer to her. He puts the scarf around Yuri’s neck. “First, your daughter’s scarf hits me. Now it’s yours. And ah, you have to chase her before it’s too late! She chased a squirrel and ran away from…”
“What do you mean?” Yuri suddenly cuts him with frown on her face. “My daughter?” Yamada looks at Yuri with questioning look. Does she forget about her own daughter?
“Yeah, your daughter. A little girl with a pink scarf.”
“You make me scared, Ryosuke. I don’t have a daughter! I haven’t even married yet!” It’s Yuri’s turn to look at Yamada with mind full of questions. “You scared me…”
Yamada can only blinks. He knows he wasn’t dreaming. “But she said that you’re her mom! And the girl really resembles you!” He insists. Yuri narrows her eyes.
“Maybe you misheard her. How can I have a daughter before I even get married?” Yamada scratches his head. He’s sure the girl said that Yuri is her mom.
“Then who’s that girl? Argh I think I’m getting crazy now.” Yamada groans again. But then he realizes the real thing he supposed to realize before. “Eh, you said you haven’t married yet?”
Yuri sighs. “I’ve said I haven’t.” And Yamada knows she doesn’t lie.
“Why?” Something going to explode inside Yamada after he heard Yuri’s sentence. Yuri rolls her eyes and turns her head away.
“Because I’m too stupid for still loving someone who ever left me.”
As he hears that from Yuri’s lips, he takes Yuri’s hand and puts it on his chest. The sentences that little girl said to her before are now flowing on his mind, and he knows he has to do something now before it’s too late. It’s not too late yet!
“I’m sorry for being too stupid and left you, Yuri. Please, give me the second chance to be with you and give you the best happiness. It will be my last chance too. So if you feel like I disappoint you again or hurting you, you can immediately dump me and…”
Yamada stops talking when Yuri suddenly opens his masker with her other hand. She puts her hand on Yamada’s cheek and makes him lower his head, then tiptoeing to reach his lips.
Yamada feels the tears flowing as he feels Yuri’s soft lips on his own lips. He releases Yuri’s hand to then embrace her tightly with both of his arms. He doesn’t want to let the girl go away again from him. He really misses Yuri, and he feels really relieved that Yuri still loves him even after what he has done to her.
Yamada takes an interval to pull away from the kiss, and he can see that Yuri is crying too. He caresses Yuri’s cheek without pulling his face too far from Yuri’s. “Does it mean that I deserve second chance from you? I’m just a failed football player who has dumped you before and left you miserably, and I…”
“I love you.” Yuri cuts his sentence. She smiles with her face still full of tears. “I love you.” Yamada feels his cheeks become warmer, and he knows, he still be able to be the luckiest man.
“I love you.” Yamada says before then peck Chinen’s lips. “Please, be my wife.”
8 years later
“Hey! Where’s Hacchan?” Yuri turns her head to the right and left while walking closer to Yamada who sits in the bench. She just went to the toilet in the park, and now she just sees Yamada there, without her daughter.
“Haruko? She runs there to catch a squirrel.” Yamada points at a direction. Yuri chuckles.
“So hyperactive. I hope she won’t take too long time. I’m worry she get lost. We have to find her!” Yuri starts to panic.
“I’ll find her if she doesn’t come back after 15 minutes. Besides, although she has a small body like kindergarten kids, she’s already 7 years old, Yuri. Don’t be too worry. We will wait here, so if she comes back, she’ll find us.” Yamada calms his wife, and pats the seat beside him, asking Yuri to sit down. She nods and sits beside Yamada.
“It has been 8 years since we meet again here ne.” She puts her head on Yamada’s shoulder. “I thought I wouldn’t see you again.”
“And I’m so happy that you give me second chance, even willing to be my wife.” Yamada pats her head gently, and kisses the top of her head.
“Haha. You deserved once, right? Everyone deserved second chance.” Yuri smiles. “And if I didn’t give you the second chance, I wouldn’t be able to get the honor to be a great actor’s wife.” She jokes, and makes Yamada laughs.
Not too long after they married, Yamada tried his luck with participating in a singing contest in television. And he didn’t expect that he’d be the winner of that contest. As he started to make his debut album as the prize of the contest, some company asked him to appear in their commercials too. And finally, he got some production offers a role on a movie to him. It reminded Yamada about the little girl’s sentence before. He finally realized his other talent. He got talents on acting too. For singing, he actually has realized it even before he became a football player, but he decided to stop singing and chose to be a football player. Now, because of singing, he started to rise again, and even make his way for being a great actor instead. His life surely changed, for he got a promising job, and have a lovely family. A lovely family that has destined for him from long ago.
Yamada and Yuri spend their time for recall their memories and have a lovely talk. What a beautiful destiny came to their life, that they could meet again, married, and have a beautiful child. As the child grown up, for a secret reason Yamada is perfectly sure, that she’s destined to be his child from years ago.
“Ah! Mama!” Suddenly they hear Haruko’s voice from afar. Yamada and Yuri turn their heads, and find Haruko is running toward them now. Yuri smiles and caresses her daughter’s head.
“Where did you go, Hacchan?” She asks.
“I was about to chase the squirrel when suddenly the naughty strong wind blew the scarf Mama made. Then I ran to look for it.” Haruko explains while landing her butt on the seat between Yamada and Yuri. Yamada embraces her. “And someone found my scarf! He said that he’s Mama’s friend. And we have some talks too.”
Yuri gets her eyes widen. “Eh? My friend? Who? And… you talked with stranger? Haven’t I told you before not to talk with strangers?” Yuri says in panic.
Haruko tilts her head, and she turns her head to look at Yamada with serious look, and then look at her Mama again. “Demo… he didn’t feel like a stranger, Mama. Although I couldn’t see his face, but his eyes looked like Papa’s eyes. And he was so kind. But I think that oji-chan is having a problem. That’s why I used Mama and Papa’s advice to him. I hope he is okay. I couldn’t see him again after the naughty wind blew again.” Haruko explains the detail. She looks down. But when she feels Yamada’s hand on her head, she looks up, and sees Yamada smiles to her.
“Don’t worry. That oji-chan used the advice you gave to him properly, and now he has united again with the oba-chan he mentioned, and be with her now. He’s thanking you so much for reminding him what he has to do.” Yamada pats her head with a mysterious smile.
“Hontou? But how can you know, Papa?” Haruko starts to show happiness, but also questioning look to Yamada. Yamada smiles again to her, and put his forefinger on his lips.
“It’s a secret.”
