The backstory of my new Giovanni character for the V:TM game.

Salvatore Giovanni was born in 1489 in Val di Greve, near Florence, Italy to Armando and Donna Giovanni, both Unico Sanguine. At the request of his father, Salvatore was heavily trained in the arts of mercantilism and showed particular promise in negotiation skills. At a young age, Salvatore was put in charge of collecting on the debts that were owed to the family in Venice. It was apparent that Salvatore was a cold, calculating businessman and never let the family debts go unpaid. After cutting out the eyes and ears of one of his debtors, it was obvious to the family that Salvatore had real promise. He was ghouled in service to the family when he was 22.

Salvatore was sent to act as a representative of the Giovanni’s investment in the http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Medici_bank Medici Bank] and the court of the Duchy of Florence. Because of their opulent lifestyle, Medici nobles and subjects often borrowed large sums of money from the Giovanni family. Salvatore made sure all debts were paid on time while keeping an amiable relationship to the powerful Medici leaders. He also provided the Medici’s with other “goods” as needed to appease the often dark and depraved desires of those who wished it. He had ties to many of the black market merchants of the time and facilitated the sale of alcohol, prostitutes, and even assassinations when it was necessary.

Salvatore was also tasked with maintaining the Giovanni family holdings in Florence while his elder brother Santino Primo Giovanni was away on his high sea adventures.

When Santino returned to Florence after several centuries away in 1705, he embraced Salvatore into the clan to preserve the blood relationship they shared. Salvatore continued to work within the Medici bank for many years afterwards, ensuring that the Giovanni investments paid off. As the Medici family began to fall out of power in Europe in the 18th century, Salvatore began to focus his attention on the family investments in the New World.

He relocated to Seville, Spain in 1743 to stay tied in with the Spanish exploration and colonization endeavors in Mexico and South America. The New World seemed a profitable investment, and Salvatore wanted to ensure the Giovanni had a foothold in the expansion and growth of these new cities. When the U.S. became its own nation, Salvatore worked quickly to build ties and investments and profit off the ensuing war for independence. While in Spain, Salvatore embraced Rinaldi Giovanni and instructed him to oversee the construction of a large shipping port in the town of Houston, Texas. Houston was strategic located in close proximity to Mexico and served as an additional port of entry to the country besides New Orleans. Rinaldi was unable to cope with the growing Sabbat population of the area and fell into trouble early on. To assist his beleagured childe, Salvatore helped a Lasombra anti-tribu escape from Spain in 1860 and asked as payment for the transport that the Lasombra help his childe with the Sabbat issue in Houston.

In 1866, after facing massive setbacks at the hands of the Sabbat, Rinaldi requested Salvatore’s help to deal with the problem and help bring the massive Ship Channel project to fruition. Salvtore arrived in Houston and refocused the family powerbase into the port, leaving most of the area to fall under the control of the Sabbat. In 1900 when the Great Storm utterly decimated Galveston, Salvatore and Rinaldi quickly focused their efforts to enhance the Houston Ship Channel to become the main shipping port for the Southern United States.

The Houston ship channel was completed and was used to funnel contraband into the US from Mexico, bringing a hefty profit to the family. While the Camarilla and Sabbat battled for control of the city during the end of the 19th century, Salvatore encourged Rinaldi to remain quiet and focus on non-political affairs. They did so for the next several years.

In 1914, Salvatore emerged from the shadows to form a deal with the new Camarilla court of the city. Continuing to focus on family matters, Salvatore and Rinaldi brokered deals with the other clans to form a small power base to counter the growing influence of the Camarilla.

When the Camarilla fell in 1986, the Sababt in the area were not nearly as eager to deal with the Giovanni after the treachery of previous years. In a last effor deal, Salvatore agreed to sacrifice his childe Rinaldi to the Sabbat in order to preserve the Giovanni's existence in the city. He turned over Rinaldi to the Sabbat victors and retreated to work on preserving what was left of the family powerbase in the city. However, the Sabbat double crossed Salvatore. Rinadi was forced to take the viniculum and become a soldier for the Sabbat, revealing much of the family secrets to the ruling bishop.

After suffering numerous Sabbat assaults and being pushed to the brink of extinction, Salvatore brokered a deal with the other non-Sabbat elements of the city in a desperate push to erradicate the Sabbat's destructive presence in the city. Salvatore lead an assault of camarilla and independant forces on the Sabbat stronghold in 2001 only to be met with defeat. Licking his wounds, Salvatore made a plea to the remaining Camarilla forces to help push the Sabbat out of the city. Salvatore revealed all he knew about the Sabbat in the city to the Camarilla Archons and agreed to help provide as much information as he can.

Thankfully for Salvatore, the Camarilla is successful in retaking the city. However, Rinaldi was never found in the ensuing attacks. It is possible he is still alive and being forced to work under the viniculum for the Sabbat.
