(heh. i said schmeakfast.)
a long while ago, i asked people what they did for breakfast, as it was the meal that seemed to defy my largely DIY, no-processed-foods, localvore, organicky goodness principles. i'll admit, i was left not wholly satisfied by mine or my friends researches/suggestions. (although i did discover a few lovely new breakfast cereals.)
i baked muffins (via
nacl). which were very good, but it doesn't seem right to eat even healthy muffins every morning for breakfast.
i made my own granola, which was always a production, always somehow dissatisfying and always expensive (honey = fuck you expensive).
particularly in the summers here, i have no desire to cook anything hot.
bread + some variety of spread never quite met my health interests.
today, i've discovered a rather nice solution to all this. i'm not sure why nobody suggested it before.
home-made muesli. kick ass.
Bircher-Muesli
2c rolled oats
1/2 c sliced almonds
1 large apple, cut into small pieces
1/2 c raisins/currants/small dried fruits
1c yogurt
1c unsweetened apple juice
cinnamon and salt to taste
mix dries. mix in wets. let sit overnight in fridge. the oats absorb the liquid. it comes out of the fridge cold. mmm. (not for mid-january; but certainly for mid-july.) it apparently keeps for about 3 days before getting gross. this recipe looks like it makes more than 2 days' worth for me, but not yet 3 days' worth. i eat big breakfasts.
oh, yeah? and it's cheap. (except for the almonds, but 1/2c isn't very much.)
diy, not processed (too much). sadly, not local to chicago.
