Yesung starts his Sundays by attending masses. He is grateful for all the blessings he had received in his lifetime. He silently sits on a pew and bowed his head to mutter a deep prayer. He smiled at the turn of his life now, he is living a life he always wanted to have, yet he still feels incomplete. The room was silent as people around him were all praying as well, when all of a sudden a loud scream pierces through the thick holy air. Yesung was shocked with all the fangirls running to him. As a Devout Catholic, he wanted respect at this sacred place, yet with all the commotion, he feels that he is committing grave sins. He bowed at the altar and silently left the place.
He drove back to his apartment feeling a little disappointed with the turn of events when he saw Ryeowook waiting by his front door with a bag of groceries.
“so were you waiting for me?”
Yesung asked and Ryeowook nodded.
“I’ll be baking today.. so I wanted to borrow your oven.”
Ryeoowok replied shyly.
“oh I see, let’s go in..”
Yesung took the bag that made their fingers slightly touch. Yesung was surprised at the sudden jolt of electricity but Ryeowook didn’t seem to notice. Yesung placed the bag on the kitchen counter and left her to change into something more comfortable. Ryeowook started to prepare everything. Yesung stopped at the kitchen door and observed RYeowook, he thought that she could make a great mom someday.
“don’t just stand there, come here! I’ll teach you how to bake!”
Ryeowook told Yesung when she saw him standing at the door. Yesung scratched his head and meekly smiled.
“wash your hands first!”
Ryewook exclaimed and he did wash his hands then out on an apron.
“what are we doing anyway?”
Yesung asked as Ryeowook lay out all the things they needed. Ryeowook checked every untensil and preheated the oven before answering Yesung.
“Chocolate chip cookies!”
Ryeowook replied with a smile, Yesung chuckled lightly.
“I could just buy it anytime!”
Yesung said and Ryeowook raised the spatula, Yesung was surprised but Ryeowook smiled.
“but these are extra special!”
Yesung raised an eyebrow and Ryeowook blew some flour on his face and started laughing.
“Why you!”
Yesung chased Ryeowook around the small kitchen and she was laughing like crazy. Yesung grab hold of her and was out of balanced. He slipped into the floor, dragging Ryeowook down with her, Yesung cushioning her fall. Though it was slight, Yesung felt their lips met, slichtest brushing but it counts right?
Ryeowook stare at Yesung’s eyes for the longest time before she got up, blushing hard. Yesung muttered sorry and now the whole kitchen felt weird and awkward. Ryeowook smiles and then started mixing.
“we better start now!”
Ryeowook muttered and Yesung nodded. They started making the cookies. They first measured all the ingredients and prepared the mixer. They creamed the butter and added sugar gradually. Then they added some eggs, the chocolate chips and the flavoring . Slowly, they added the flour until the mixture clumped together. They then took out a small ice cream scoop and placed the dough into the cookie sheets.
“a little bit farther oppa.. they will spread when they bake”
Ryeowook said and Yesung followed orders, he was happy to do so. They finally placed the sheets inside the oven and started to clean up. They were still avoiding glances and Yesung felt that it was even worst than rejection. The timer rang and they took out the cookies and let them cool.
“I hope it tastes well..”
Yesung muttered and Ryeowook assured him.
“off course it will!”
When the cookies are cooled, Yesung took one and ate it. After the first bite, he confirmed it; it was the same cookie the ahjumma in Seoul had given him. he tasted the same… it was more than delicious, and now he was more than eager to learn the secret.
“Ryeowook-shi, what is the secret?”
“What?”
“secret ingredient! These cookies are the best!”
Ryeowook smiled, seeing Yesung so serious at a simple piece of cookie.
“it’s love oppa! When I cook or bake or make anything for others, I always think of their happy faces and how my cooking can make them happy. It’s as simple as that.”
Yesung took in the words. Maybe it is right: LOVE . but how can such a simple feeling can make a difference? Yeesung smiled and ruffled Ryeowook’s hair as the little one packs the cookies for her aunt.
“let me take them to Seoul, I’m going there later.”
Ryeowook was surprised but wrote the address of her aunt and handed it to Yesung.
“why are you going to Seoul?”
“just some important things to do… not a problem.”
Ryeowook smiled and packed the other cookies. Then she took Yesung’s cookie jar and placed a whole tray of cookies inside.
“You worked hard for these oppa..”
Ryeowook said and Yesung just smiled at her. She waved goodbye and took the other cookies with her to give to her brother and cousin, to Kangin and finally to Kyuhyun. Yesung stood in front of the counter and looked at the packed cookies for Ryewook’s aunt. He smirked and touched his lips.
“a very brief encounter.. I knew it was love.. how could I’ve been so blind..”
Yesung then changed into something appropriate and took his Mercedes Benz and drove to Seoul. It was a peaceful drive back to the city. He was welcomed by a calm winds. He parked his car outside a café and entered with a smile. The ahjumma welcomed him. He handed the cookies and took a seat in front of the counter.
“it’s from Ryeowook.”
Yesung muttered and the ahjumma smiled.
“So you now know the secret?”
The ahjumma asked and Yesung nodded.
“You’re very lucky to have her as your niece.”
“well we are.. but it’s just a pity she has to carry such a large burden.”
The ahjumma left to fix him his usual latte. Yesung was surprised by her statement. By any achance what was she talking about? The ahjumma gave him his cup and sighed as she wiped the tears off her eyes.
“She’s too young to have Leukemia.. she’s practically dying each day. She’s fragile.. such a fragile butterfly slowly losing her wings.”
Yesung was even more surprised, what is she implying? Is Ryeowook going to die?
