So I got an email from Coach this morning asking me to meet him when I got through with classes. Pretty much guaranteed I wasn't really paying attention in anything--'xcept Comparative Anatomy 'cause we were dissecting a calf--and I couldn't really tell you whether I dawdled or I raced over to the fieldhouse where he's got his office, 'cause from the email...well, it sounded pretty bad.

Got worse when I got in there though. He had me take a seat in front of his desk, and then he kept standing the whole time, and I was practically sitting on my hands trying not to fidget. He asked me about my wrist, and I showed him, told him I'd be back in play in a couple weeks, no problems. The season's over now but we got training picking up again end of summer. He looked all thoughtful, and I told him how I been working up again--picking up the running further and faster, weight-training when I can, roughing it up with Akamaru and Hana's boys 'cause once you fought with those dogs, a maul's like...hell, like soccer. Pansy sport.

And he still looked all thoughtful, and I was damn near sweating.

And then he said he's taking me off lock forward.

I guess I just sat there for a minute--he prolly coulda swung at me and I wouldn'ta flinched. Can't tell you what I was thinking 'cause I dunno if I was thinking. But he took pity on me after a minute or two. Said I was too small and too quick to waste on forward, and he'd been looking up the line-up for the other teams this next year, and I was gonna get mowed under.

Y'know I'm not really a small guy. I'm 5'9" which is pretty short for a lock forward, but I was always a good jumper and plenty strong so he kept me in there. But he showed me the stats for some of the other teams, and the smallest guy I'd be up against is six inches taller than me. So yeah, guess even I can see sense there. And I'm gonna be the fastest guy on the team now that Jones is graduating...

So this season, I'm giving up #4 jersey. Not sure yet if I'm gonna be moving to #10, fly half, or #11, winger; Coach says he's gonna play me in both and see where I do best. Guess this means I gotta work on my kicking a lot more this summer. And the running--agility, not just distance. And tackling, 'cause playing a back means I'm gonna both tackle and get tackled a lot more.

So that's why I was late for the cake, Hana. Happy birthday anyway!
