“Sora, what are you doing?”
A hand touched Sora on the shoulder, and it, combined with the question, caused him to yelp and jump. He had been crouched to the side of a closed door, but lost his balance when he was startled, ending up on his back on the hallway floor.
“Huh? Kairi? I thought you were downstairs,” Sora answered from the floor. He raised one arm, index finger extended, and pointed at the door. “I’m trying to see if Riku’s awake.” Kairi rolled her eyes and Sora giggled and wondered if she knew that he could almost see her underwear from his position. He shifted his position slightly, trying to move his head so he could see without her noticing.
“Don’t bother him if he’s sleeping, Sora,” Kairi scolded him. “He doesn’t have to wake up yet.”
Sora pouted. “But I like it better when he’s awake.” He stared at her for a few seconds longer, trying to get some effect with the pout. When nothing happened, he scrambled to his feet and started brushing invisible dust off of his uniform.
“I’m going in there. If he’s not up, I’ll get him up!” He struck a heroic pose, as if he were about to charge into battle, and Kairi stifled a laugh with her hand.
“Oh, Sora, be careful! You don’t know what’ll happen! What if you get hurt?” She clutched at Sora’s arm, appearing afraid. The boy responded by looping an arm around her waist and hugging her to him protectively.
“Don’t worry, I’ll be fine,” he assured her. “I think the worst part is his snoring.” He scrunched up his face and did his best version of his friend’s snoring, though it shortly dissolved into laughter. He extracted his arm and shoved the door open, flashing Kairi a grin as he ducked through and closed it.
It turned out that Riku was asleep, sprawled out on his bed with only his feet covered with any part of a blanket. The room was darker than normal for the time of day-indicated by the bedside clock to be 6:45-primarily due to the curtains being closed over the only window. Sora crept over to the bed, dodging some clothes and a stack of books on the floor, and slowly climbed onto the mattress. He waited a few seconds and then straddled Riku’s stomach.
“Riku? Hey Riku, time to get up!” He tapped on the older boy’s chest with his index fingers; no special pattern, unless left-right-right-right-left-right-left-left-right-left meant anything to anyone.
Riku groaned and shifted underneath Sora, cracking one eye open. “Wha the…it’s too early to get up.” To him, Sora registered as a brown, white, and light blue…thing. A thing that he realized was assaulting his chest. “What are you doing…?”
“Waking you up.” Sora shruged, but didn’t cease his tapping. “How can you sleep so late? I’ve been up for an hour.”
Riku finally opened his other eye and managed to conquer sleepiness enough to grab Sora’s arms and push them away. “Why, though? School doesn’t start until nine.” Sora shrugged.
“Kairi woke me up early. She told me I take too long in the shower and she wanted to make sure we weren’t late on our first day.” He smiled sheepishly.
“Kairi’s here too?” That got Riku’s attention-he tried to sit up, but Sora’s weight on his stomach prevented this somewhat. He ended up flopping back on the bed, exasperated. “Sora, get off of me. Now.”
Sora wiggled his hips and shook his head at Riku. “No way. I’m staying here until you promise you’ll get up and not go back to sleep.” He noted the position they were in and wondered what would happen if Kairi decided to wander in. Fortunately, Kairi had lost interest in the status of the two boys and had wandered downstairs.
“C’mon, get off. You’re crushing my ribs and possibly some major organs. Not to mention my spine. Besides, I don’t like you that way.” The corner of his mouth twitched as he waited for Sora to figure out the implications of that.
Sora processed this for a minute, then quickly leapt off Riku’s bed, face twisted into a mixture of surprise and mild disgust. “Hey, don’t say stuff like that! I have a girlfriend you know!” He flushed slightly at this but tried to cover it up by facing away and crossing his arms. Riku smirked and slid off the bed, stretching before heading for his bathroom.
“Of course you do. You let everyone know the moment you two started going out.” The bathroom door closed with a loud click. Sora stood there for a little bit before wandering over to the door and leaning against it.
“Hey Riku, do you think it’ll be hard to go back to school after we’ve been gone for so long?”
“I don’t know,” Riku yelled over the sound of his shower.
“I’ve never seen your bathroom. Is it big?” Sora asked.
“Can’t you wait to talk to me after I get out of the shower?”
“No.”
“I know you can. Go away.”
Sora pouted at the door. “You’re no fun, Riku. I just wanted to talk to you is all. What’s wrong with that?”
His only answer came from the water, so he gave up and leaned against the wall next to the door. Riku didn’t take long showers anyway, barely long enough to get wet, Sora thought. After a couple minutes, Sora knocked on the door.
“Are you done yet? You’re taking a long time.” He tried turning the door handle to see if it was locked; it wasn’t, and he poked his head inside. He was promptly met with a towel to the face.
“Get out of here!”
“But, I…” Sora removed the towel just in time to see a glimpse of Riku’s face before the older boy yanked the shower curtain closed. He bundled the towel up and clutched it to his stomach as he crouched beside the bathtub, reaching one arm out to poke the curtain towards his friend.
“Seriously, get out. I’m fine. ” Riku grumbled from the tub, pushing the curtain back out.
“Here, you need your towel.” Sora stood up and pulled the shower curtain aside. Riku, who hadn’t been expecting this and didn’t react quite fast enough, made a strangled noise and lunged for the curtain. For a few seconds, the two boys stared at one another silently, until Sora realized exactly why Riku wanted him to leave.
“Riku…what’s…uh…”
Unable to think of anything to say, Sora settled for staring again while Riku rolled his eyes and glared back. Instead of a pair of legs, Riku’s body from the waist down appeared to have changed into a long shark’s tail that almost matched his hair. Sora looked completely confused and had no idea what to do; Riku was attempting to look either indifferent but failed and looked angry instead.
“If you’re wondering how it happened,” Riku explained, “I have no clue. It just…happened.” He frowned, as Sora had leaned over to pet the new appendage, and lifted the end of the tail to slap him in the head. This caused him to yelp and fall into the bathtub on top of Riku, soaking his uniform and causing the silver-head to get even more annoyed.
The only way this could get any worse would be if Kairi came in right now… Riku thought.
It's not very good, but I had to get it out of my system.
