Comfort zone

nanila asked:

" I don't know if this qualifies as something out of your comfort zone, but I'm curious so I'll ask anyway. You seem to have been an expat for a large percentage of your adult life. Why? Also, do you see yourself ever returning to the UK?"

I left the UK in 1984 and apart from short visits the only time I've been back is when i was working on a project in Wigan in, I think, 1992. So yes, I've spent almost half my life outside the UK. In my lifetime I've seen the rise of illiberality in the UK. Thatcher/Major was succeeded by Blair/Brown. Both have pandered to what I most dislike in the British psyche. The low level violence, the insidious racism (I'm not a racist but...), the intrusive authoritarianism. Orwell would recognise today's Britain but he would be surprised how it got that way.

Canada isn't perfect but it's pretty damn good. If we could fix the winter and sell Alberta to the Americans it would be near perfect. I live in the most multicultural neighbourhood in one of the most multicultural cities on the planet and I love it. I'm here to stay.
