College rugby

To the best of my recollection I have not watched a university or college rugby game since I moved to Canada. Actually I don't think I've seen one since I left Durham. So today was a new experience. I reffed an OCAA Women's game between Humber College and Mohawk College. Humber is almost in Brampton but it's surprisingly easy to get to on the TTC from downtown. It only took an hour door to door.

It was an interesting experience. There was a bit of the razz one sees in US college sports though I'm not suggesting for a minute this was Michigan vs. Notre Dame. There was a PA system and an announcer and loud music and a furry mascot. There was a reasonable amount of support. No cheerleaders or bands though! The game itself was not particularly good. Humber have a well established program with several players who have played age group rugby for the province. Mohawk is a newish team and they were playing a player short. I blew time 15 minutes early with the score at 75-0. I'd be very interested to do a good, competitive women's college game. I suspect it would be getting up to TRU 'A' division standard.
