Eugene Onegin - DVD Review

I just finished watching the 2007 Metropolitan Opera recording of Tchaikovsky's Eugene Onegin. It is about as good as an opera recording can get. It helps that Onegin is a strong opera with a perfectly credible plot drawn straight from Pushkin. But that's just a start. Ah, I loved that production (which I saw because it was in the first season of the opera-at-the-cinema). I hadn't seen Onegin before and was really overwhelmed. I still think about the scenes with the leaves a lot - very well judged visually and thematically I thought.

It was before we got wise to the Met in HD broadcasts so this was new to me. Certainly as good as any of the later broadcasts and much better than most.
