The more I look at it the more I think that the only real difference between New Labour and the Conservatives is that Labour has a decidedly masochistic streak.
Labour feels uncomfortable about mid Victorian levels of inequality but continues to increase it.
Labour doesn't real like nuclear weapons or pointless wars but they are the price of being America's bitch.
Labour knows housing policies that discriminate against ethnic minorities are wrong but if it's the price of keeping the BNP off the local council...
and so it goes on.
Every "unavoidable" policy choice produces a frisson of guilt. No wonder the chief architect of it all converted to Catholicism.
