nanila asked me to write about five things associated with the colour λ = 610 nm.
1. Glenmorangie and Oranjeboom
Back in my Unilever days I used inevitably to hang out with Dutch people more than one might usually do. So one April 30th, Koninginnedag, I was so hanging out with a bunch who decided that it was their patriotic duty to drink Oranjeboom. The Brits among us responded in spirit with a round of Glenmorangie. Even bad puns are an excuse to drink good Scotch.
2. My refereeing kit
One might think that wearing mainly orange would make one look like a marker buoy or something but somebody did a pretty good design job on this kit as it makes people look about twenty pounds lighter than the previous iteration.
3. Vin de Pays de la Principaute d’Orange
A little known appellation that produces some pretty decent wine. I've lucked in with this one a few times.
4. Orange County
OC pretty much epitomises what I find most disturbing in Merkan culture. One has the super rich in their gated "communities",cheek by jowl with the desperately poor. One has drive in mega-churches that worship money and status and certainly wouldn't have had much time for a grubby little Jew from Palestine. Then there's the endless sprawl liberally provided with swimming pools and golf courses in what is, by rights, a desert. The whole thing is dependent on cheap oil and cheaper water. Only Dubai outstrips it in artificiality. Add plastic surgery, bizarre hair dos, theme restaurants and Disneyland.
5. Orange Revolution
I don't claim to be an expert on Ukrainian politics but I'm pretty sure the Orange Revolution has a lot more to do with Ukrainian nationalism vs. Russian nationalism than progressive, democratic views vs. neo-Stalinism. It's a general tendency of western governments and the western press to present that whatever faction in a given country that opposes the folks they don't like as progressive and democratic. Think Hamid Kharzai who is about as progressive and democratic as General Franco. I'm not convinced that Yulia Tymoshenko is much better. She may not be a Putin puppet like Viktor Yanukovych but I suspect she's a typical Ukrainian nationalist. I mean look at that hair style. Nobody has worn hair like that outside a Wagner opera since the 1930s.We have those in Toronto. They rival the Poles for combining the most regressive features of Roman Catholicism with anti-Semitism. I'm still not sure how many extermination camp guards we are harbouring. Anyway, I don't expect to see anything good come out of the Ukraine any time soon.
If you want a shade, tint, colour or wavelength just ask.
