My Top 20 of the 00's...

Dec 31, 2009 10:54

Cause I've been inspired by Rolling Stone's list....and feel like there was SO much good music put out these last ten years, here's my personal Top 20...I don't even know where the last 10 years went. WTF!?

And holy crap, I was able to rank them.

  1. Radiohead--Kid A (2000)
I always thought OK Computer would be RH's crowning acheivement, but as time goes on, I'm not sure. This album has everything...from confusion, to beauty and paranoia...How to Disappear Completely kinda kills me. And then there's Idioteque, which is like the most paranoid dance-freakout I think I'll ever hear.

  2. Ryan Adams--Heartbreaker (2000)
I can't thank Vicky and Jeff enough for pushing me into Ryan. I don't think there's a better song writer of my generation. This album slays me--the lyrics are heartwrenching, but then there's the insanity of To Be Young (Is To be Sad), Is to be High. Plus...Come Pick Me Up. I mean, that alone puts this album here.

  3. Wilco--Yankee Hotel Foxtrot (2002)
I remember taking awhile to truly get this album...I remember listening to it at Cal State Fullerton on my lunch breaks on my stupid discman. And like, it's another one of those that just grew on me and made me fall in love with Jeff Tweedy's quirky awesomeness

  4. U2--All That You Can't Leave Behind (2000)
This one got cemented in the list when I saw U2 at Staples toward the end of this tour, in November of 2001. Walk On...after 9/11, was probably the most hopeful thing anyone put out there.

  5. Arcade Fire--Funeral (2004)
I remember hearing Wake Up the first time, and thinking there was nothing else that was both as sad AND joyous as hearing that song. Arcade Fire at Coachella 2005 was probably the second most religious concert-experience of my life (after that U2 show...)

  6. Bright Eyes--Lifted (Or the Story is in the Soil, Keep Your Ear to the Ground) (2002)
Another one that took a bit for me to "get", this album came out at a time when I was just craving new stuff, and Conor's intensity on this album was all I wanted to hear.

  7. Ryan Adams--Cold Roses (2005)
Pure beauty. I officially declared my love for alt-country after this album.

  8. Death Cab for Cutie--Transatlanticism (2003)
As a whole, this album just sticks. Beautiful and haunting. I can probably blame a lot of my love for this album on Seth Cohen, but it was sort of inescapable at the time. So not completely. LOL.

  9. Coldplay--A Rush of Blood to the Head (2002)
This one made me realize that Coldplay wasn't just a flash in the pan. I don't think I listened to any album more in 2002 than this one.

  10. Pearl Jam--Binaural (2000)
A lot of people (including Jeff), will probably think I'm an idiot for putting this on here. But I can honestly say it has personal sentimentality in that it was one of the few PJ albums I wasn't really up to snuff with when I met Jeff, and once he sent me his second copy...I fell in love with it...and him. I think as a whole, there's more of my favorite PJ songs on this one than any other album.Light Years, Thin Air, Breakerfall, Nothing as it Seems, Sleight of Hand...

  11. White Stripes--Elephant (2003)
I'm thinkin' about my doorbell... Holy CRAP I was sort of obsessed with this album. SO catchy.

  12. Bright Eyes--I'm Wide Awake, It's Morning (2005)
I didn't really think Conor could top Lifted...but this one stands on its own. Also, I clearly love sad songs.

  13. Jimmy Eat World--Bleed American (2001)
From start to finish, this is probably the best pop album of the decade. Complete with handclaps. I still love it.

  14. Beck--Sea Change (2002)
I'm noticing that 2002 had a LOT of good music come out...and this one is the only Beck album that like, I can continually listen to. It's another one that's haunting and beautiful. I wish Beck would make more albums like this. I think he needs to work with Nigel Godrich more often.

  15. The Killers--Hot Fuss (2004)
I remember--the first song I heard on this album was Jenny Was a Friend off Mine, and like, I was OBSESSED immediately. Indie played it WAY in advance of the album's release, and like, I couldn't find it anywhere to download. It was stupid. Then Somebody Told Me broke, and like, I didn't really get the hype about the single, but then the album came out, and I was obsessed again. I'm not sure they can top this one for me...

  16. Kings of Leon--Because of the Times (2007)
This one's got Knocked Up, Charmer, AND On Call. Caleb's screeches alone, on Charmer, make me melt.

  17. Tori Amos--Scarlet's Walk (2002)
Tori's albums are getting creepier by the year...but this was the last QUALITY album she's made, in my opinion. The storytelling is brilliant, and the piano is still in the forefront.

  18. New Amsterdams--Never You Mind (2000)
Probably the most lo-fi album ever, but I don't care. Iit's a silly, acoustic jaunt and I love it.

  19. No Doubt--Rock Steady (2001)
This is MY party album. It's rock, but still party music. I can still listen to Underneath It All and not be sick of it.

  20. Modest Mouse--Good News for People Who Love Bad News (2004)
This one's definitely wacky, but the first time I heard Float On, I was like OH SHIT. WOW.

It's weird...I'm noticing that there isn't much from the past few years on here...And I'm not sure if that's cause they haven't necessarily STUCK on me, or if really, there just hasn't been as much good stuff coming out. I think it's the latter, which makes me feel like maybe I'm getting old and crotchety? I dunno. LOL.

Anyway, HAPPY NEW YEARS, KIDDOS!!!

end of year surveys, new years
