Fads and Common Sense

I don't understand the hype about guys piercing their ears. My brother wants his ears pierced just because all of his ghetto friends are getting theirs pierced. He's asked my mom a million times and she keeps saying NO and even my (most of the time) charismatic father says NO. And Ryan throws a tanrum about it. Everytime. Over a stupid, stupid FAD. Should you depend on an earring to make you look cool? Does it matter what you look like? What you wear, what you listen to? NO, it shouldn't. But that's definitely not something in the sponge-like minds of hopeless kids throughout the world. They soak up culture, yes, but even the stupid things that make up a particular culture. Seriously, are grills even remotely "active"? It's so stupid.

Not to say that I am perfect, and that everything that I like is right. I'm no different from a kid who soaks up the culture of their living spaces. The only thing I'd like to think that I am different from is that I don't like ridiculous, money-wasting fads such as golden tooth caps, big diamond studs on a boy, squeaky-clean Jordans, and shirts 5 times larger than the actual wearer.

None of this would've bothered me as much if only my brother hadn't been begging for stupid things like these. Maybe not grills, but everything else. He's absolutely crazy. And you know what? My parents are crazy for EVER having let him have his way. Especially since his grades had been falling, his attitude stinks, and his manners have been decreasing. I think their submission in giving him stuff he wants but doesn't need nor deserve has made him a spoiled brat.

And now the whole family has to pay for these mistakes. Literally and figuratively.

But what can I do? I can't stop this and change it. I'm not God. What I can do, though, is hope that his attitude'll change, or he'll be in big doo-doo in the future.
