Did John use Sam & Dean as bait for the shtriga in "Something Wicked"?1. The rules of the road -- use your turn sig- oh, wait. Right. Open discussion, have at it. No trolling, that's about it

I think the Shtriga was meant to be Dean's first solo kill. Daddy left saying he may be gone for a few days and that they weren't to leave the room at all. Dean leaves the room and the Strega gets Sam, but! Daddy bursts in just in time and comes to the rescue.
I'm thinking that when Daddy went out, he stayed close by so he could help if necessary, but not so close that he could see Dean's every move. (The man's gotta piss sometimes, jeez.)
It essentially served to put the fear of failure into Dean. Plus, the look of disappointment on Daddy's face when he said that Dean wasn't supposed to let Sam out of his sight? Ouch.
Of the two distinct possibilities*, either would work in the long run. #1: What could have happened: Dean kills the enemy, saves Sam, gets Daddy's approval and then continues to work to keep it

And what about Dean? Dean was a little kid, he's supposed to be protected too. How was this in any way a necessary thing to teach a 9 year old? It's essentially saying "Dean, your only worth something so long as you do your "job" and protect your brother", whether that is consciously what John meant or not. That's not just cruel, that's twisted.
