if you know what devendra banhart looks like, that's what juan looks like now.
i saw Juan Varela, (coach Varelas son, and also my former hurdling coach today). He was coming out of taco bell and i was heading to classic thai to pick up my food. I never realized what pretty eyes he has. THey are hazel. Well anyway, from afar i hear someone call my name. And i saw that it was some bearded guy in the car. And i couldn't tell who it was and so i asked "who are you?" not until up close did i realize it was Juan (if you know what devendra banhart looks like, that's what juan looks like now). He is still cute as ever. He was such a weird, drugged out, but super sweet guy. I remember he used to bite my head to say hi. THe first time he did that i freaked out. I thought he was aiming for my neck. But then i got used to it. Ummm...he said that from afar i look the same. But from up close i look really different. I told him it's probably my hair, and my face got chunkier (i haven't seen him since high school). He offered to gimme a ride, but since i was like 100 yards away from my destination i said no. He is no longer in school, which is no surprise to me. We had a conversation about how school works for some people but for others it doesn't. HE said it doesn't work for him, but that he has to stick with it eventually. Since he was blocking some cars in the back coming out of the drive through he left, i told him to say hi to everyone for me. The Varela family holds such a special place in my heart!
I remember than in junior high i had such a crush on him, i think he was a senior at that time. He was the only guy that wore bellbottoms and had long hair. MMMmmmm, he was so yummy. Then to my wonderful surprise i learn in 9th grade that he was my x-country coaches son (coach Varela) and that he was the hurdling champion back in his day. SO coach V brought his son over one day during track practice to train the girl hurdlers and there he was...i was so giddy. By that time he didn't seem as manly as he looked when i was in junior high and he was a senior. BY the time i was in track i was taller than him, and i think drugs had gotten the better of him and got skinnier, or he was always like that, but i had just grown both ways or something. Either way, i still had the biggest crush on him. I think that he might have had a crush on me back then, but since i was a minor and blah blah blah.
COme to think of what i mentioned earlier about how i never noticed how pretty his eyes were. I think i know why now, it just hit me like a ton of bricks. He used to always be glassy eyed back in the day. FOr the first time ever, i don't think he was on anything. Good for him! I hope he gets his life straight and what not. HE is too nice, (and too cute) , and too good of a person to do nothing with his life.
