Who am I, then? Just a story.

"I'm not an expert but I don't think scarecrows knock."

Oh, MARTHA. Martha, Martha, Martha. ♥♥♥ You are impossibly lovely. How much did I adore the bones-of-the-hand scene? And seizing control of the hostage situation. And just not taking anything from anyone, including John Smith.

"You're the Doctor's companion. What exactly do you do for him? Why does he need you?"
"Because he's lonely."
"And that's the man you want me to become."

And John Smith. Fragile, frightened, oh-so-human John Smith. I fell in love with him in this episode, because although he's a bit of a bastard, he really wants to be a good man and do the right thing and he's scared to death of losing love and losing himself. Just a story...

Also David did a brilliant job differentiating between Smith and the Doctor. I loved that bit where Tim gives him the watch and he starts rattling off a typical Doctor speech, and then stops halfway through, stricken, asking "Is that what he talks like?"

"If I could do this instead of you, I would."

I fell in love with Joan, too, with that line. She is exactly the woman John Smith needed. Brave and human and heartbroken but keeping moving. That said, I am glad that she turned down the Doctor's offer to come with. She's the woman John Smith needed--not the Doctor. And it would have broken her heart even more and while that's actually what the Doctor seems to be doing to most of his companions these days, it would be hardcore unfair to her.

"He didn't just make himself human...he made himself an idiot."
"Same thing, isn't it?"

The kid who played Baines was creepy as hell. So was the little girl. Just sayin'. They could've been in old school X-Files. Remember old school X-Files? When they had all the creepy child actors? These two would've been right at home.

"We wanted to live forever...so the Doctor made sure that we did."

Also absolutely adore the return to no-second-changes I-used-to-have-so-much-mercy Doctor.

"Could you change back?"
"Yes."
"Will you?"
"No."

Totally heartless of him to say, but what else could he have done? Lied? Well, yes, he could've lied. In fact, why didn't he? He lies to everyone else.

Interesting parallel to the Pudsey Cutaway from David's first season, though... (Refresher: once he convinced Rose that he was, in fact, the Doctor in a new body, she asked, "Can you change back?" "Do you want me to?" "Yes." "Oh." "Can you?" "No." Which was equally heartless, albeit more on her part than his.)

"You could get hurt."
"Well, so could you, travelling around with him, but that's not gonna stop you."

AHHH, TIM. ♥ Tim. Tim should've gotten the Companion offer, 'cause he'd be grade A material. Has anyone written that AU yet? No? Why not?

Watching the TARDIS leave with that little half-amazed smile! ♥ And I was so, so, so so thrilled that the Doctor and the watch saved his life in the war. And then at the memorial! Looking over and seeing Ten 'n Martha there with the poppies and and and *flail* Too. Much. Love.

Even if he did still look all of twelve years old, even as a soldier fighting in a bloody, muddy war.

Um. Not to say it was perfect. It did suffer from too many endings and a few silly moments. But all in all brilliant and I loved it and I have squee.

:D
