November Media

Dec 01, 2017 20:12

According to Goodreads, I read 33 books in November. Also according to November, I currently stand at 587 books in 2017. According to my own record keeping, of those 33 books, 25 were books I read for the first time. My ratio holds roughly steady at 76% new. Of those 25 first-reads, 16 were comic books; 18 were Doctor Who related, overlapping heavily with the previous category.

Of the 8 rereads, 3 were Animorphs, 2 were The Baby-Sitters Club, 3 were The Saddle Club.

According to my records, I watched 164 episodes of television, a slight drop from October's 177. 108 of those episodes were new to me. There was 1 new-to-me series, consisting of 1 episode, a sharp drop from October's 10. 66% of my TV consumption was new material; less than 1% was completely new.

I didn't watch or rewatch any movies.

According to last.fm's 30-day tracker, I listened to 754 tracks in November, an average of 25 tracks per day. The top artist was The Pogues, maintaining their lead with 277 scrobbles, followed by Shane MacGowan and the Popes (120), Markéta Irglová (81), Taylor Swift (38), and Declan Bennett and Glen Hansard tied for fifth place with 28 scrobbles each. A total of 83 artists and 70 albums, with a Pogues bootleg being the most-played album (August 23 1989 in Cork, 50 scrobbles); the most-played non-bootleg was Markéta Irglová's Muna with 44 scrobbles, in 5th place. Away from things that last.fm tracks, I have acquired a number of interesting musicals which I am making a dedicated effort to catch up on. I've also been making a largely unsuccessful attempt to keep up with the X-Cast's increased release schedule on top of all my other podcasts releasing on a normal schedule.

Individual thoughts:
Books:

This month's Kindle First read was The Unkillable Kitty O'Kane, by Colin Falconer. It was fine? The historical elements were more interesting than the personal drama, tbh.

I picked up O'Grady's translation of The Pursuit Of Diarmuid And Grainne, which is GREAT. Highly recommended.

And after ages of intending to get around to it, I finally reached Lord Dunsany's The King Of Elfland's Daughter, which is a weird and charming read. What's in like in the alternate timeline where Dunsany was a bigger influence on modern fantasy than Tolkien?

My Doctor Who Target read has just gotten into the Four & Sarah & Harry era. Which is a lot of fun. Sarah and Harry's dynamic is so unlike anything else. Meanwhile, over in comics, I've just wrapped up the second year of the Tenth Doctor's run on Titan -- and, I mean, Gabby/Cindy is my new OTP. Perfect BFF romance.

TV:

I finished Lexx! What is that show. What the hell was going on at any given time. Why is it so addictive. Why did I cry when it was all over.

In related thoughts, what the hell is going on on Dirk Gently's Holistic Detective Agency.

The DC TV shows aren't really holding my attention too well. The crossover was fun but felt kind of pointless and the wedding was super-awkward. However, Leo Snart and Ray Terrill were adorable, so that improved my opinion of the whole thing.

Why am I still watching Once Upon A Time? Does anyone know?

I finished watching the second seasons of Stranger Things! I really like how they're handling most things. I could do without the romances.

The only completely new-to-me series I attempted was the first episode of American Horror Story: Cult. After which I had no desire to continue watching the series.

My Doctor Who rewatch has gotten me into season 9, Clara's last, and I'm not ready to say goodbye to her again but I'm also looking forward to rewatching Bill's era and IDK life is hard.

Movies:

Nothing at all to report this month.

Music:

Taylor Swift released her sixth album, reputation, and it's a lot better than the promo singles suggested. Favorite tracks: I Did Something Bad (also, not from November because it was just released today, but you should check out Shoshana Bean and Cynthia Erivo's cover of it), Getaway Car, Dancing With Our Hands Tied, New Year's Day. Skip: End Game, Look What You Made Me Do, King Of My Heart.

Karen Olivo also released an album! I kickstarted this thing literal years ago, so finally having it is an amazing feeling. It's also an amazing album. Favorite tracks: All of them, literally all of them, she covers two songs from Once and I sobbed my eyes out.
