"what if you really fancy someone?" "suppose you have to maintain eye contact." "that's BRILLIANT":D

Do you know why I always win at chess? It's because I have a secret move. I kick over the board.

I really liked this one. It's a good first-adventure-in-the-TARDIS episode; it starts out as a cheerful, optimistic, "look at this cool thing humanity accomplishes" thing for the Doctor to show Bill as her non-scary introduction to the universe...and then it turns into Death and Terror and Muderbots and Panic, because of course it does, this is Doctor Who.

(I also really liked the design of the emojibots. They're so CUTE and TERRIFYING and MISUNDERSTOOD. And the Doctor's concerned/thinking/angry emojis. Awww.)

So far this season we're two for two on the monsters of the week being misunderstood/misunderstanding. Which I think is interesting. I'm not sure what it means or if it will continue, but I think it's interesting -- the pilot/puddle/Heather just wanted to leave the planet without breaking a promise to Bill; the emojibots just want people to be happy but don't understand grief. I don't know. It's an interesting pattern.

But mostly this is all about how much I love Bill, because she's GREAT. She's enthusiastic and charming and empathetic, and she thinks. ("Advice and assistance obtainable immediately.") She sees people, even when they don't really want her to, and her heartbreak over realizing why humanity left Earth nearly broke my own heart.

You know what actually broke my heart, though? When she was trying to get the little boy to smile despite his dawning realization that his mother was dead, because if he didn't smile the emojibots were going to kill him. What a horrible situation for literally everyone.

Also, I'm very curious about what's hiding in the vault. "A long time ago, a thing happened," indeed, wtf.

Next week: [trailer spoilers]the Regency episode! Looking forward to that!
