THAT WAS A PRETTY GOOD TONY AWARDS. Not as good as the year Once won everything. But pretty good.
I didn't do a prediction sheet this year but I TOTALLY SHOULD HAVE because there were very few surprises in the wins.
I'm still kind of sick so I'm just gonna do a very quick rundown:
- Mostly very good performances! Rocky was WTF but Rocky is WTF anyway. Most of Hugh's hosting songs were weird but I did adore his songs for the leading actress nominees. If/Then, AGGTLAM, Violet, and Beautiful were definitely the highlights. Oh, and Hedwig. Hedwig was amazing.
- There were a surprisingly small number of people who had to be played off the stage during their acceptance speeches! Well done, people who realize how little time you are allotted to speak!
- AUDRA MADE HISTORY. TWICE OVER. Literally, you guys, I thought I was not particularly invested in any of the categories this year, and then they announced leading actress in a play and I was chanting "Audra, Audra, Audra" and THEN SHE WON AND I MAY HAVE SCREAMED A LITTLE. She broke two records -- she has more Tonys than any other performer, and she's won in EVERY CATEGORY it is possible for a performer to win in, and JFC AUDRA IS AMAZING. And her performance as Billie Holiday was spooky and amazing and wow.
- And her speech made me bawl.
