Tony nominations this morning!!!!
If you follow me on Twitter for some reason, you've already seen everything I have to say; if not it's behind the cut.
My baby Once took home eleven well-deserved nominations, the most of any show. YOU GO, ONCE. Nominations include Best Musical, Best Leading Actor (Musical), Best Leading Actress (Musical), and Best Featured Actress (Musical), as well as a number of technical awards. And Best Book.
Seriously, Tonys, reward Oncefor being amazing and you may earn some forgiveness for the wrongs you've done me over the years.
Peter And The Starcatcher got 9 nominations, including Best Play which surprises and delights me because I was expecting in this season for it to be shut out of that category and recognized elsewhere. Instead it got both. YAY.
Newsies, which I was expecting to be the big player this season, brought home 7 nominations, beat out by musicals Once (obviously), The Gershwins’ Porgy and Bess (10), Nice Work If You Can Get It (10), and Follies (8). Maybe the Tonys have more of a grudge against Disney than I remembered. Not complaining if it gives Once a better shot at taking home awards in June. Newsies nods included Best Musical, Best Leading Actor (Musical), and Best Original Score. I mention those three because Best Musical is always interesting, Jeremy Jordan was eligible for Leading Actor (Musical) twice over this year (though, predictably, he took home the nomination for Newsies), and Once wasn't eligible for Original Score.
After much debate and argument from everyone over who would take the fourth Best Musical slot, Leap Of Faith won it. In its only nomination of the night. Wow. I am happy with this because it means Spider-Man and Ghost didn't get the slot. I am sad that Raul was snubbed in Best Leading Actor (Musical) but not surprised; Leap of Faith was not well-reviewed.
Bonnie and Clyde (which was the other show that made Jeremy Jordan eligible for Leading Actor (Musical) got two nominations. Best Original Score and Leading Actress (Musical) for Laura Osnes. I am somewhat surprised Melissa van der Schyff wasn't nominated for Featured Actress (Musical) as she was generally predicted to be the show's one nomination, but hey, Laura Osnes was fantastic, so ... not complaining.
Lysistrata Jones was remembered in Best Book.
Spider-Man took home two nods, Scenic Design and Costume Design. I was maliciously hoping for it to be shut out entirely, but not expecting it. Therefore, I am choosing to be happy that its only nominations were in technical design categories.
Overall, aside from the not-unexpected shutout of Leap Of Faith, I'm not unhappy with the nominations this year. (Sorry, Raul, Jessica, Kendra, Kecia, Leslie ... Still love you guys. Find a better show to be a vehicle for your awesomeness.) We'll see how I feel once the actual awards are handed out. (If you snub Once like you did The Scottsboro Boys, I will never, ever forgive you, Tony Awards. I don't expect it, since Once is still running, but I'm still making the threat.)
